The next day, I took a day off to book an abortion at the 

hospital. 

I went through all kinds of checks. Nothing was seriously 

wrong. 

I could have the surgery in a week. 

Holding the thin medical form, I felt strangely relieved. 

It’s over now, Lila. 

Just then, an old coworker called me. 

I answered. 

Her voice was angry on the line. 

“Lila, when are you coming back?” 

“Your director position has been empty since you left.” 

“Mr. Pierce kept your office exactly how you left it. Your 

stuff’s still there- no one touches it.” 

“Even the dying pothos plant on your desk is untouched. He 

won’t let anyone near it. 

“But now Lynn took the position after being here five 

minutes.” 

“What gives? All she did was cover a few drinks for him at a 

party, got wasted, and he felt bad.” 

“You covered his drinks so many times- you once drank until you had a stomach hemorrhage…” 

“As soon as she got in, she threw all your stuff away. Even the 

pothos you and Pierce grew together- she pulled it out by the roots and dumped it downstairs. We cleaned up for hours.” 

“She does no work, dresses up like a princess every day, dumps all her work on us. We’re stuck working until midnight every night, exhausted.” 

“On top of that, she runs to the CEO’s office complaining 

every day. Several pretty, talented coworkers got forced out.” 

“She’s so showy. She begs Pierce to take her to parties every 

day, and he spoils her. He even bought her a multi–million diamond ring at an auction recently.” 

“We all miss you so much. When will you apologize to Pierce 

and give in?” 

“He cares about you so much. If you swallow your pride, he’ll 

forgive you.” 

I stared into space for a long time. 

I thought hearing this would hurt, would make me sad. 

But it was like I’d gone numb. 

I didn’t hope anymore. I didn’t care. 

The pain that used to take my breath away was gone. 

In an instant, the rose–tinted glasses fell off. He was just a 

stranger. 

I didn’t expect him to change. I didn’t care what he did. Even 

him spoiling Lynn didn’t bother me. 

After a long while, I said softly. 

“I won’t apologize to him. I didn’t do anything wrong.” 

“Don’t tell me anything about him anymore.” 

“There’s no chance for us anymore.”
