Ten Years of Love Ended in the Delivery Room Chapter 04

“Fine, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault.” I held back my tears, my voice shaking. “Please, Damon, let me see the baby. Just one look. Then I’ll leave and never cause trouble again, okay?”

Damon glanced at me. Gone was the old care and pity in his eyes, only exhaustion and irritation remained.

He let out a sigh, “”Fine, you want to see the baby, don’t you? Then get Gwen to forgive you. If she forgives you, I’ll let you see.”

Get Gwen to forgive me?

I froze, my mind going blank.

Gwen was still kneeling on the ground. She looked up at me, and there was a hint of mockery in her eyes.

But when she spoke, her words were nothing but understanding and kind, “Damon, don’t be so hard on Kaley. I don’t blame her, really. She was just worried. It’s just…”

She lowered her head, speaking softly, “It’s just that when Kaley came storming in like that earlier, everyone got the wrong idea about me as a doctor. If only Kaley could say a few words to clear things up for me…”

Damon spoke at once, “You heard her? The little scene you just caused made everyone think Gwen is at fault. Go clear her name.”

“Go kneel outside the entrance and tell everyone that you were wrong, that you shouldn’t have wrongly blamed Dr. Strait.”

I looked outside. It was midday, the sun blazing down.

But in the end, I lowered my head and said in a heavy voice, “Okay, I’ll do it. Just let me see my baby.”

I walked step by step out of the hospital entrance.

Under everyone’s stare, I knelt on the burning ground.

The sun made me dizzy. Sweat dripped down onto my wound, sending sharp pain through my whole body.

But I opened my mouth and shouted with all my strength, “I’s sorry! I shouldn’t have wrongly blamed Dr. Strait!”

I shouted it over and over.

The crowd pointed at me and whispered among themselves.

The sun moved from overhead to the west, then sank below the horizon.

Damon had left at some point.

Finally, as my vision began to darken, Gwen spoke with a soft laugh, “Kaley, your baby is in the nursery. Go take a look.”

I struggled to my feet, trembling with excitement, and dragged my numb, tingling legs as I raced toward the nursery.

Just as I reached for the door, I heard two nurses talking inside.

“What a shame. Such a beautiful little girl. If her father had paid the medical bills sooner, she wouldn’t have died untreated.”

The other nurse agreed, “Tell me about it. It wasn’t even that much money. And he’s supposed to be from some wealthy family, right? But he never paid, not even until the baby was gone.”

My mind went completely blank.

I couldn’t hear another word.

I turned and walked step by step toward the mortuary.

Damon frowned as he listened to the eighth busy signal in a row coming through the receiver.

He sat on the sofa, staring at the empty living room, feeling strangely restless.

It was just a little punishment. And she’s not coming home because of that?

But as he thought, an uneasy feeling crept over him.

At last, he picked up his phone and called the hospital.

“Hello? This is Damon Garner, Kaley Garner’s husband. Is she still at the hospital seeing the baby?”

The staff’s shocked voice came quickly, “Mr. Garner… you don’t know? Your daughter passed away an hour after she was born.”

“Mrs. Garner just came and took the child. She said she wanted to say goodbye to the baby herself.”
