Ten Years of Love Ended in the Delivery Room Chapter 03

Ten Years of Love Ended in the Delivery Room Chapter 03

I regained consciousness to a sharp, throbbing pain in my abdomen.

I snapped my eyes open and found myself in a familiar room, back at home.

But I’d been at the hospital giving birth, hadn’t I?

I reached for my belly instinctively, and found a long, raw scar where my belly had once swelled.

Dread shot through me. My baby!

“The baby… where is my baby?”

I struggled to sit up, the wound tearing with pain, but nothing compared to the panic in my chest.

I stumbled out of the bedroom and into the nursery.

The crib was empty.

The tiny clothes I’d laid out myself were folded neatly, but no baby was there.

I tried desperately to remember. All I could recall was Dr. Wilson’s terrified voice before I blacked out. “The mother is hemorrhaging! Emergency C-section, now!”

I remembered nothing after that.

No. I have to go to the hospital. I have to find my baby!

I didn’t know how I made it to the hospital.

Every step sent cold sweat pouring from my wound, but I didn’t care.

I burst into the hospital lobby, staggered up to the front desk, and grabbed hold of a nurse’s hand with all my remaining strength. “Where is my baby? I’m Kaley, I gave birth here. Where is my child?”

The nurse was so startled she couldn’t even find her voice.

Then, from behind me, came a tearful cry, “Kaley, are you really going to push me to my death?”

I turned and saw Gwen rushing toward me.

In front of everyone, she dropped to her knees right in front of me. “Kaley, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!”

She lifted her head, eyes red and teary. “I shouldn’t have gone against your wishes when I delivered your baby. It’s all my fault. Please, please don’t report me, okay?”

She held up her hand wrapped in thick gauze. “Haven’t you punished me enough? Look, my hand was almost ruined. I might never practice medicine again…”

A crowd quickly gathered around us.

“Oh my God, how could she be so unreasonable? Not only did she injure a doctor’s hands, the very thing a doctor needs to do her job, but now she wants to report her too?”

“This is outrageous. These hospital troublemakers are out of control!”

“Get out of the hospital right now! Stop getting in the way of people who are trying to see a doctor!”

Each accusation stabbed into me like a knife.

But I had only come here to find my baby!

Damon hurried over just then.

When I saw him, I clung to him like I’d found my last hope. “Damon! Thank goodness you’re here. Tell me where our baby is. Is it okay? Is it a boy or a girl?”

I babbled wildly, tears blurring my vision.

But Damon said nothing.

He frowned, looked annoyed, and pulled his hand away roughly. “Kaley, can you just stop? Why are you filing a complaint against Gwen? Her hand is badly hurt. What more do you want?”

“I…”

“All of this is your fault.” He cut me off coldly. “If you had just cooperated, stopped being so difficult, and didn’t cause a scene, would any of this be happening…”

He didn’t finish, but my heart sank to the bottom.

I didn’t care about the blame and the accusations pinned on me.

I only wanted to know where my baby was.
