Ten Years of Love Ended in the Delivery Room Chapter 01

Ten Years of Love Ended in the Delivery Room Chapter 01

All my prenatal checkups went smoothly after I got pregnant, but on the day I gave birth, I endured eight full hours of difficult labor.

At the peak of the pain, I reached down instinctively, only to discover in horror that my vagina had been stitched shut!

I lashed out at the female obstetrician in a fury, “What the hell kind of doctor are you? How can you be so reckless? You’re going to get me and my baby killed!”

But the doctor just gave me a dismissive, contemptuous smirk and sneered, “It should’ve been stitched up a long time ago. It’s not like Damon would ever touch you anyway!”

Pushing down the confusion and rage boiling inside me, I was just about to call for another doctor to take over when Damon Garner strode into the room with an unmistakable look of impatience written all over his face.

“Stop making a scene. Gwen’s still an intern; it’s normal for her to be inexperienced and make a mistake.”

“Besides, she’s in her probation period for full-time conversion. You’re only going through a few extra hours of pain; it’s not like you’d want her to lose her job over this, right?”

I trembled with anger, about to snap back, when a sharp pain shot through my lower abdomen.

I could feel the baby’s head crowning, and I begged through gritted teeth. “Damon, it hurts so bad… Ask her to cut the stitches!”

But the next second, Damon actually pulled out his phone and took photos of Gwen Strait, documenting her first delivery.

An overwhelming pain tore through both my body and my heart.

In that instant, the decade we’d spent together lost all meaning, dissolving into nothingness.

The baby struggled more and more inside me, and I could bear it no longer. “Gwen, cut the stitches now! Do you want to kill my baby and me?”

Damon immediately put down his phone and frowned.

I felt a flicker of hope, thinking he still cared about our baby and would tell Gwen to undo the stitches.

But then he turned to me with an icy glare, “What’s all this talk about death? Just because you’re jealous, you have to smear a professional doctor like that?”

“Have you been Mrs. Garner for so long that you’ve forgotten how to show people respect?”

I looked up at him in disbelief, my heart shattering.

We’d been together for ten years. And in this moment, as I was tearing myself apart to give him a child, the only thing he offered me in return was his contempt and coldness.

Once, Damon would have yelled at the doctor without hesitation.

Once, when I’d only scraped my knee, he’d called in every doctor from the entire private hospital in the middle of the night. He’d said if I so much as complained about pain again, they’d all lose their jobs.

But now I was screaming in agony, and he didn’t even blink.

When had things changed?

It seemed to start after I got pregnant.

The Damon who’d always doted on me was gone.

He started staying out all night, and his clothes smelled of unfamiliar perfume.

I couldn’t eat for days because of morning sickness. But he’d often take a call, say coldly that he had a dinner appointment, and leave without looking back.

People said men only pretend until you get pregnant. I hadn’t believed it at first.

But looking at what was happening now, all the clues made sense.

My hands twisted in the sheets, gripping so hard I thought I’d tear them apart.

Amid the silence, Gwen finally spoke, “Alright, Damon, it’s all my fault. Don’t be mad at Kaley, okay? I’m sorry, Kaley. I’ll cut the stitches right now.”

The apology rolled off her tongue easily enough, yet her fingers dawdled as if they had all the time in the world.

She even wasted several minutes turning to grab iodine.

Each contraction grew stronger, wracking my body with pain and draining my strength.

In my despair, Gwen finally stepped over.

Instead of cutting the stitches, she pressed her palm down on my belly. “Easy there, Kaley. Let me help adjust the baby’s position first. Otherwise, even if I cut the stitches, you won’t be able to deliver.”

Her pressure was brutal, each push landing exactly on the most painful spot of my contractions.

Pain shot up my spine to my skull, and I begged through clenched teeth, “Stop… it hurts… Damon, make her stop, please!”

Gwen ignored me, pressing down even harder. “Just bear with it. I’m doing this for you and the baby.”

A senior doctor standing nearby suddenly went pale. Even her voice trembled. “Mr. Garner! The baby is already in the birth canal. Any more delay and both the mother and the child will die. Our hospital cannot afford the consequences of that!”

Thinking of my baby, I swallowed the metallic taste of blood in my mouth.

I stared fixedly at Damon, my voice shaking. “Damon, are you really going to watch someone kill our baby?”

Damon frowned, a flicker of long-absent concern crossing his eyes.

But then, Gwen stood up, her eyes red, and made a show of leaving the delivery room. “Forget it, Damon. I’m useless. It’s my fault Kaley doesn’t believe in my medical skills. Let Dr. Wilson take over. It doesn’t matter whether I get the full-time position or not…”

Without a second thought for how I felt, Damon immediately pulled her into his arms with a pained, protective look. “Don’t ever put yourself down like that. You know I hate hearing that kind of talk.”

“I know how good you are. She’s just being dramatic. This isn’t your fault.”
