Silenced Omega Chapter 22

Silenced Omega Chapter 22

Slim to none.

The words slammed into Preston’s mind.

He thought of the bloodstained charm by the river, and of the cold, dead look in Laney’s eyes.

“Stop,” he roared into the phone. “Stop right now. Do not pursue them.”

The man on the other end was stunned.

“But Mr. Doyle, you said—”

“I said stop!” Preston was shouting now. “Send your men down to search. If she’s alive, I want to see her. If she’s dead, I want…”

The rest of the sentence caught in his throat.

Camden stared at him, his brow furrowed in concern.

“Preston, what’s wrong with you?”

Preston didn’t answer.

He hung up the phone, bracing his hands on the desk as his entire body trembled.

After a long time, he finally looked up, his eyes shot through with red.

What had he done?

Preston locked himself in his private villa for three days.

In those three days, he called in every favor, used every connection he had.

He investigated the fire from eight years ago. He investigated the incident at the lake. He pulled every one of Genevieve’s hospitalization records from over the years.

On the first day, he found a witness to the fire.

A retired firefighter.

“I remember that day clearly.”

The old man sat on his porch, his mind drifting back. “The one who ran in was a little girl. Thin, with a ponytail.”

“She carried a boy out on her back. A beam fell and hit her left arm. I could see the bone, but she never let go.”

Preston’s voice was tight.

“What did she look like?”

“Pretty. Delicate. With very bright eyes.” The old man thought for a moment. “Oh, and she had a tiny mole, right at the corner of her left eye.”

Laney had a tear-shaped mole at the corner of her left eye.

Genevieve did not.
