The doctor looked visibly uncomfortable.

“The donor heart matched to you was just reassigned.”

I clutched my chest hard.

“Reassigned? Reassigned to whom?”

“Did someone pay you more? Whatever he paid, I’ll double it!”

The doctor did not dare answer. He pulled on his mask and tried to get away.

I climbed down from the operating table and followed him, almost falling apart.

“You know my condition. I can’t wait any longer. How can you just reassign it like this?”

“This is no different from murder!”

My shouting quickly drew a crowd.

I screamed, “Who stole my donor heart? Do rich people get to decide who lives and dies now?”

Even though I was an old-money heiress from a fallen family, I had never lost my composure like this.

The onlookers were furious on my behalf, and it did not take long before they pointed me toward the person responsible.

I rushed over without caring about anything else, but the moment I saw who it was, my blood seemed to freeze.

It was Luca.

He was the undisputed kingpin of the city’s underworld.

He stood in front of the operating room, blocking anyone else from getting inside.

Gianna was crying beside him. The moment she saw me, she grabbed my arm.

“Isabella? Are you saying my mom stole your donor heart?”

Then she dropped to her knees in front of me.

“I was wrong to keep taking your things before. I know that now, and I’m sorry.”

“If you’re angry, take it out on me. Please spare my mom, okay?”

Luca’s expression changed at once.

“Isabella, you lost your own mother, so now you want Gianna to lose hers too?”

“How can you be this vicious?”

My nails dug deep into my palms, and I clenched my jaw so hard I nearly tasted blood.

“Luca, her mother has cancer. A heart transplant won’t cure her. Gianna is doing this on purpose—”

Before I could finish, Gianna suddenly threw herself at my feet and started begging.

“Isabella, I’ll give everything back. I’ll never bother you or Matteo again.”

“I’m begging you. How much do you want? I’ll pay you, okay?”

My whole body went cold. I was so furious I could barely speak.

“I don’t want your money! I want my donor heart. Give it back to me!”

“Enough!”

Luca flew into a rage and grabbed me hard.

“To hurt Gianna’s mother, you’re pretending to be sick and using other people’s sympathy to cause a scene. Isabella, you’ve gone too far this time.”

He called over his guards, and they dragged me out.

I struggled with everything I had, but I could not break free.

My heart beat faster and faster, and the pain in my chest felt like it was about to explode.

By the time I was thrown outside the hospital entrance, the suffocating feeling of being on the brink of death had swallowed me whole.

In agony, I reached out for help. The same onlookers who had been helping me changed their minds after hearing Gianna’s version of events.

“Disgusting. You almost fooled us into helping you hurt someone, and you’re still pretending.”

My hand dropped weakly.

In the last moment before I lost consciousness, I only hoped that in my next life, I would never, ever see Luca again.

Meanwhile, after Gianna’s mother’s surgery was over, Luca wasted no time going ahead with his wedding to Gianna.

But when it came time to exchange rings, his mind was filled with images of Isabella.

At the hospital that day, she had looked so pale and worn down. He still could not stop worrying.

“I’m sorry, Gianna. Let’s end the ceremony here for now.”

“Your mother is already confused, but she looked happy today. I can at least say I fulfilled her final wish.”

With that, he yanked off his bow tie and called the family Consigliere.

“Look into Isabella’s medical records.”

Ten minutes later, the Consigliere called back, his voice uneasy.

“Don, the records show that Donna was diagnosed with acute cardiomyopathy. Her heart transplant was scheduled for a week ago.”
