Selling Out My Godfather Husband Chapter 04

Selling Out My Godfather Husband Chapter 04

It felt as if someone had seized my heart in a brutal grip, and I could not even breathe.

When my son was still too young to speak clearly, I had once shown him this bracelet.

I told him that this bracelet was what I had left of his grandmother.

My mother was gone forever, and this was the only thing I could hold on to when I missed her.

Back then, little Matteo had thrown himself into my arms and comforted me in his soft baby voice, “Mommy still has Matteo.”

And now, he wanted to buy the most precious thing I owned so he could give it to someone else.

Gianna made a show of taking it off.

“I’m sorry, Bella. Matteo said you never wore it, so I thought you didn’t want it anymore.”

Luca, who had been discussing wedding security with the Consigliere, heard the commotion and quickly came over.

When he saw Gianna taking off the bracelet, he immediately looked at me in displeasure. “Isabella, what are you making a scene about now?”

“It’s just a bracelet. Your wrist is too thick for it anyway. If it’s only going to sit there unused, what’s wrong with letting Gianna wear it for a while?”

I could not hold back anymore and shouted, “That’s the only thing my mother left me!”

“Gianna, you even had to take this from me? Aren’t you afraid my mother’s ghost will come for you tonight?”

At my words, Luca’s expression tightened with embarrassment.

“It’s fine, Gianna. Give this one back to her. I’ll buy you a new one.”

“It’s bad luck to wear a dead woman’s jewelry.”

My son immediately promised, “Yeah! Dad can buy you one that’s bigger and prettier!”

As he spoke, he took the bracelet Gianna had removed and hurled it straight at me.

“Don’t throw it!”

I reached out in a daze, but I could only watch as the bracelet crashed hard onto the floor.

It shattered into pieces.

In that instant, it felt as if a part of me shattered with it.

I knelt on the floor and frantically picked up the broken pieces as heavy tears struck the ground one after another.

“Stop picking it up.”

When Luca noticed the cuts on my hand, he frowned and reached out to pull me up.

“It’s just an object. Is this really necessary?”

I slapped his hand away, my eyes burning red.

Then I threw the divorce papers I had prepared long ago straight into his face.

“No need, Luca. We’re getting div—”

Luca misunderstood and mistook the divorce papers for a share-transfer agreement for the family business.

He gripped the papers and flipped straight to the last page.

“Isabella, money isn’t enough for you anymore? Now you’re trying to get your hands on the family business?”

“Did you have our son take the bracelet on purpose so you could use my guilt to squeeze shares out of me?”

He let out a humorless laugh and signed his name without even reading it.

“Clever move. I’ll let it slide this time.”

“But don’t expect me to tolerate the same trick twice.”

He tossed the papers back at me and walked away without looking back.

I sat on the floor, watching the pages scatter through the air, and let out a silent, bitter laugh.

He did not know there would be no next time.

I did not want him anymore.

And I did not want our son anymore either.

In the days that followed, I spent every day at the hospital.

The money Luca had paid me was enough not only for my surgery but also for the follow-up exams and ongoing aftercare afterward.

Once the heart transplant succeeded, I would finally rewrite the tragedy of my last life and begin again.

At last, the day of the surgery arrived. I was waiting for anesthesia when the doctor suddenly removed his gloves.

“I’m sorry, Ms. Colombo. We can’t perform your surgery today.”

My heart clenched.

“What do you mean? Why can’t you do it?”

Although I had been using the best medication available, cardiomyopathy was always dangerous.

During the time I had spent waiting for surgery, I had suffered no fewer than three episodes.

The worst one had nearly killed me.

I had been pushed into the emergency room for twelve full hours, and I survived only because I clung desperately to the will to live.

My body had no time left to wait.
