files but found no record of an Elodie

A younger clerk blurted out, “Elodie’s file? The boss had all her records burned after

The person next to him elbowed him sharply.

Chloe’s face went pale.

An icy chill spread through her heart, and

her legs felt unsteady.

She walked out in a daze, somehow finding herself at the entrance to the underground parking garage.

From deep within came a scream that was

barely human.

Scarface was chained to the floor, pressed against a bed of broken glass.

Just as he spoke the words, he caught a flash of a skirt in his peripheral vision.

Terrified, Chloe turned to run.

Alaric caught up in a few long strides and grabbed her wrist.

She was shaking uncontrollably, tears streaming down her face.

Alaric held her tight, his voice stiff.

“Don’t be afraid. I’m just teaching them a lesson. So they’ll never dare to touch you again.”

“That’s not it!” Chloe cried, looking up at
