Rebirth in Canaan, No Looking Back Chapter 16

“She was so badly hurt, but she kept

herself between me and them.”

“She’s a good person… How could I have done that to her?”

The carefully controlled mask on Alaric’s

face shattered.

Chloe knew.

He tried to explain

“That’s all in the past. Now, I only have

you-

-”

Chloe shook her head desperately, pulling

free from his arms.

“But Elodie never hurt me. She saved my

life.”

“Why didn’t you cherish someone like that?”

She screamed the words, and then all the fight seemed to go out of her.

For the first time, Alaric had no answer.

Yes.

Why hadn’t he cherished her?

It was evening in Lisbon. I had just come out of the market, planning to make a

seafood stew for Leo and me.

My right hand still couldn’t manage much weight.

After several surgeries and a long course of physical therapy, it could now only hold light objects.

My phone rang. It was Leo.

Just as I was about to answer, an arm snaked around me from behind, dragging

me into an alley.

Pure instinct took over.

I dropped my center of gravity, drove my elbow back, and stomped the heel of my

right shoe down hard on my attacker’s

foot.

The man grunted in pain, his grip loosening for a split second.

A blade flashed between the fingers of my left hand, and I pressed it to his throat.

It was Alaric.

He looked at me and suddenly smiled.

“Darling, you’re still so sharp.”

“Even if you killed me right now, I’d

deserve it.”

My stomach turned. I felt nothing but disgust.

“Alaric McCall, we are divorced.”

“Get out of my life. Don’t ever let me see you again.”

He seemed not to hear me. Instead, he leaned in closer, letting the blade break his skin. A trickle of blood ran down his

neck.
