For the next two weeks, there was still no

news of Elodie or Leo.

Alaric’s temper grew shorter by the day. No one at the casino dared to speak above a whisper around him.

He couldn’t understand it.

A seriously injured woman and her brother, who was also recovering.

How could they have vanished so completely from right under his nose?

Alaric got drunk in the penthouse again.

When Chloe arrived, a subordinate was in

the middle of a quiet report.

Alaric cursed and smashed the bottle

against the wall.

The subordinate saw Chloe, immediately shut his mouth, and excused himself.

Chloe pushed down her unease and walked over to steady him.

“Alaric, why did you drink so much? Let me help you to bed.”

Alaric was blind drunk. He grabbed her

wrist.

“Elodie…” he slurred. “Don’t go… I was

wrong. Come back…”

Chloe froze.

Hadn’t he said his wife was gone?

Her eyes swept around the room.

The dressing table, the wardrobe, the nightstands.

There wasn’t a single photograph.

How could a man who supposedly missed his dead wife not keep even one picture of her?

The next day, Alaric went with her to her prenatal checkup.

On the way back, she spoke softly.

“Alaric, when are we getting married?”

“If we wait much longer, I won’t be able to

hide my stomach.”

A few weeks ago, Alaric would have been

overjoyed.

Now, he just felt a spike of annoyance.

“Things are too busy at the casino right now. We’ll do it later.”

Chloe lowered her head.

“If you think I’m too much trouble, I can

leave.”

Alaric was silent for a few seconds.

“Don’t overthink it. Once I get things sorted out at the end of the month, we’ll

do it.”

After they returned to the casino, Alaric went into a meeting.

Chloe used the opportunity to slip down

to the records room.
