Rebirth in Canaan, No Looking Back Chapter 02

I went to the clinic alone and scheduled the termination.

The doctor looked at the ultrasound screen and frowned.

“Ms. Vale, your situation is… unusual.”

“There’s no record of you ever being pregnant in the last seven years.”

“If you go through with this termination, you may have difficulty conceiving again.”

I smiled faintly.

“I’m divorced. I don’t want to bring a child into that.”

A cold solution flowed into my veins, and my consciousness began to splinter and fade.

In the haze, I saw the Alaric from before, his ear pressed to my stomach.

He was smiling, saying our child would be a natural at cards, that he’d have to teach them early.

He’d even called an astrologer to pick the luckiest possible name.

He held me, promising that as soon as he found a successor for the casino, he’d take me and the baby far away from Las Vegas.

We would travel, see the world.

Then, the images shattered, replaced by the words he’d said to Chloe.

You’re the only one worthy of being the lady of this place.

When I woke up, I dragged my hollowed-out body to Leo’s hospital room.

Thank God. This time, he’d only been injured on a job. He’d be discharged soon.

In the last life, he died in front of me. I wouldn’t make that mistake again.

I contacted the broker again, paying a premium for two tickets on a flight leaving in three days, along with a pair of fake passports.

If I tried to leave through official channels, Alaric would know in an instant.

Then I called my most trusted contact, gave him a bundle of cash, and asked him to quietly arrange for Leo’s discharge.

With everything arranged, I called an Uber, giving an address a few blocks away from my apartment.

It was an old habit. The casino had too many enemies; I never let a driver know my actual building.

But the moment I got out, someone covered my mouth from behind and dragged me backward.

I fought with everything I had, breaking free. I’d only taken a few steps before something slammed into my back.

Pain exploded through my body. Blood soaked through my clothes in an instant.

I didn’t need to guess.

They were Alaric’s enemies.

Olympus had swallowed up too much territory over the years.

More people wanted Alaric dead than you could count.

I reached for the small blade in my purse, but someone wrenched my arm behind my back.

My phone was ripped from my other hand and smashed against the pavement.

“Behave!”

The man choking me dragged me toward a van parked at the curb.

Just as despair began to set in, a familiar black Maybach turned off the main road.

It was Alaric’s car.

With the last of my strength, I screamed, my voice raw, and struggled against my captors, trying to make him see me.

The car slowed for a moment.

He saw me.

The next second, the Maybach accelerated, disappearing around the corner.

Through the rear window, I saw Alaric pull Chloe into his arms, shielding her from the sight.

As if what was happening outside the car wasn’t his wife being abducted.

Just some ugly mess on the side of the road.

All the strength drained out of me.

Pain. Cold. Darkness.

Then my last trace of consciousness was swallowed whole.
