Rebirth in Canaan, No Looking Back Chapter 13

So why had he changed?

Was it because her hands were stained

with blood?

Or was it the way she had depended on him, the flashes of temper over the years?

But when he saw those same traits in

Chloe, he found them natural, even

endearing.

He stood up, his chest tight.

No.

He had to get Elodie back.

Olympus couldn’t exist without her.

“Turn this city upside down. Find Elodie,” Alaric snarled into the phone.

“Even if she’s dead, I want to see a body.”

“Boss, we’ve checked everywhere.

Hospitals, motels, underground clinics…

there’s no sign of her.”

“Then find her brother.” Alaric slammed

his hand on the desk. “Leo was injured too, wasn’t he?”

“People don’t just vanish into thin air.”

“Find him. Get him in our custody. I don’t believe for a second Elodie won’t show

her face.”

After hanging up, he paced the room, his chest heaving, a vein throbbing in his temple.

“Alaric?”

Chloe stood at the door to the study, her voice soft.

“Who are you looking for?”

Alaric turned. The ferocity hadn’t yet left his eyes, and Chloe instinctively took a step back.

He took a sharp breath.

“It’s nothing. Casino business. You don’t need to worry about it.”

Chloe came in and gently placed a small

dessert on his desk.

“I made you something sweet. Try it. Maybe you’ll feel better.”

Alaric picked up the fork and took a bite.

It was very sweet.

But the sweetness did nothing to quell the storm of irritation raging inside him.
