Kyson just smiled. “I’ll tell you everything slowly some other time.”

I was dying of curiosity.

I even tugged his hand and acted playful at a stoplight to coax the answer out of him, but Kyson still refused to spill it.

Sparse rain started falling along the way. To keep driving safe, I dropped my pestering questions.

By the gate of my residential complex, the rain had thinned to a drizzle.

Kyson wanted to walk me all the way to my front door, but I turned him down.

I’d just pulled the door handle to get out when he caught my wrist and pulled me back.

His voice was soft, pleading, and laced with quiet temptation.

“Can I get one last kiss before you go?”

I was still a little scared of how dizzy his kisses made me, so I sat up straight and pressed a quick peck to his cheek.

By accident, my lips landed right on his Adam’s apple.

I scrambled away fast, knowing he’d yank me right back in if I hesitated a split second longer.

Kyson let out a helpless, amused huff.

“Charlotte, do I really scare you that bad?”

I flushed and waved my hands awkwardly.

“Go on, head home!”

After watching Kyson’s car pull out of sight, I walked lightly toward my building.

A man’s figure suddenly materialized around the corner, making me jump out of my skin.

Before I could let out a scream, a soaking-wet Leonardo clamped his hand tight around my wrist.

“How could you kiss another man, Charlotte?”

“Did you sleep with him too?”

“Where did he kiss you? Here?”

His rough fingertips traced back and forth across my lips. I struggled to break free, yet his hands trembled violently despite his crushing grip.

“Let go of me!”

“Leonardo, get it through your head! I am not your girlfriend anymore!”

“We already broke up!”

“I don’t have anything to do with you!”

Leonardo had inhuman strength, reeking of alcohol.

I also spotted countless cigarette butts littering the ground, soaked and muddied from the recent rain.

He looked unhinged and deranged, leaning in to try to kiss me.

“No, we aren’t broken up. We’re never breaking up.”

“I’ve secured the project now. I don’t need to keep up the act with Elena anymore.”

“You’re the one I love.”

“I wouldn’t even care if you slept with him.”

“I’d even take responsibility for any kid you have, no strings attached.”

“Charlotte, you belong only to me.”

His rambling words made no sense at all.

As the unhinged Leonardo leaned in toward me, the trauma from the summer camp assault crashed back over me.

Some surge of adrenaline gave me sudden strength, and I raised my palm and slapped him as hard as I could.

The force threw me slightly off balance.

Leonardo froze dead in his tracks, the madness fading a little from his eyes, his gaze sharpening into bitter clarity.

He even cracked a mocking laugh.

“Quit playing innocent.”

“Does he know I was your first time?”

“Does he know how you cried under me?”

“He—”

Leonardo never finished his sentence. A fist flew out of nowhere behind me, slamming straight into his jaw.

I barely processed what was happening before the newcomer tackled Leonardo to the pavement, landing punch after punch to his face.

It was Arthur, who’d come back unexpectedly.

“You son of a bitch, Leonardo!”

Afraid Arthur would kill him in his fury, I moved to stop them, only to be pulled back by Kyson, who’d turned around and returned.

He guided me gently aside and brushed my hair lightly.

He then slowly unclasped his wristwatch and tucked it into his pocket.

“I don’t know what set Arthur off, but I’m not about to stand by and do nothing.”

“Stay back, Charlotte, alright? Don’t get blood on your clothes.”

Before I could react, Kyson joined the brawl, throwing punches at Leonardo as well.

Arthur was flying off the handle, throwing wild, uncoordinated blows, but Kyson struck with cold precision, every punch landing clean on target.

Leonardo was quickly beaten black and blue, blood staining the pavement brutally.

Shaken to my core, I quickly summoned several soldiers from our family to pull the two men apart.
