My Family Gave My Life to My Sister Chapter 07

A long, low sigh suddenly echoed through the great hall.

Black mist churned through the air as a cold digital display slowly lit up.

The System interface appeared in midair.

Dark blue data streams pulsed around it.

Its mechanical voice held no emotion, yet carried an absolute authority that seemed to stand above

every rule.

Mom, Dad, and Grant immediately fell to slapping themselves in the face, repeatedly. They slapped themselves repeatedly, tears pouring down their faces the entire time

“Please, System! Please!”

“We were fools!”

“We were blind!”

“Aubrey lied to all of us!”

“She deliberately turned us against Hannah!”

“She manipulated us into favoring her!”

“We never meant to hurt Hannah!”

“We were wrong!”

“Please!”

“Give Hannah another chance at life! Just one more!”

“We’ll make it up to her. Please, please-just give my child back. Please”

“We’ll love her the way we should’ve for the rest of our lives!”

Lines of code streamed down the System interface as it looked down at the three of them kneeling

there in tears.

Its mechanical voice was deep and heavy, carrying the endless echo of calculations.

“For many years, I have overseen the calculations of fate.”

“I have examined countless human hearts and emotional variables.”

“Yet never have I encountered parents who twisted right and wrong so completely and showed such

extreme favoritism.”

The words struck Mom and Dad like a hammer.

They broke down instantly.

Both raised their hands and slapped themselves across the face.

Again.

And again.

Each slap harder than the last.

The sharp sounds echoed through the silent hall.

“We were wrong!”

“We played favorites!”

“We were fools!”

Mom sobbed so hard her voice broke.

“We should’ve believed Hannah!”

“We shouldn’t have kept yelling at her and letting her down!”

“We failed my sweet girl!”

Dad clenched his teeth, his eyes red as he cursed himself.

“I was a terrible judge of character!”

“I protected the wrong person!”

“This is all my fault!”

“I even called Hannah stubborn that day!”

“It’s all my fault!”

Grant remained frozen on his knees.

His entire body had gone cold.

The regret in his eyes looked ready to swallow him whole.

The System said nothing.

Its interface flashed.

A holographic projection appeared before them.

Aubrey appeared on the screen.

She casually said she wanted fried chicken.

Mom immediately went to the kitchen to make it.

She said she wanted dessert from that bakery across town.

Dad got in the car and went to buy it without hesitation.

She said she wanted that wedding dress.

Grant took her in for a fitting the very next day.

Whatever she asked for, they did it.

The image shifted.

I saw myself lying in that bedroom.

One hand pressed over my torn wound.

The wound gaped open, the flesh refusing to stay together.

Blood kept seeping out.

I bit down on the corner of the blanket, trying little by little to piece myself back together.

My fingers were covered in my own blood.

And even then, I’d still been thinking-

Once they were done, they’d come check on me.

The projection changed again.

I stood in the living room, crying in front of Mom.

“Mom, I’m not lying!”

“I was in the car accident too!”

“I’m doing the mission too!”

Mom didn’t even turn around.

“Aubrey doesn’t feel well.”

“Don’t make things harder right now.”

Then I stood in front of Grant, clutching his sleeve.

“Grant, look at my hand!”

“Look at the wound!”

“I called you that day…”

He frowned and pulled his sleeve out of my grip.

“Hannah, stop.”

“I’m busy taking care of Aubrey right now.”

Then I crouched beside Dad and looked up at him.

“Dad, do you remember?”

“Before I left, I told you I was going to buy Mom a silk scarf.”

“The light blue one.”

Dad looked down at me, irritation written all over his face.

“Stop! Aubrey barely survived.”

“Can’t you just give it a rest for a couple of days?”

Every time I told the truth, they only became more annoyed with me.

I showed them my wounds.

They said I was fishing for sympathy.

I showed them my call log.

They said I’d faked it.

I stood in front of them crying.

They said I was competing with Aubrey for attention again.

Then the projection stopped at the wedding.

White roses filled the venue.

Crystal chandeliers glowed overhead.

A muted pastel backdrop framed the ceremony.

Aubrey walked down the wedding aisle in her wedding dress.

Grant stood at the front, waiting for her.

The officiant looked at him.

“Do you take her to be your wife?”

Grant looked into Aubrey’s eyes.

“I do.”

The guests applauded.

Mom and Dad wiped away tears.

Everyone was smiling.

And at that exact moment, I saw myself lying alone in that bedroom.

My body twitched one final time.

Then it went completely still.

Cold blue light flickered across the System interface.

It looked down at the three people devastated by grief and regret.

Then its mechanical voice spoke again, delivering a judgment that could not be overturned.

“Hannah and Aubrey were both meant to live many more years.’

“Neither of them was meant to die when they did.”

“Knowing how hard it is for a human to live even one lifetime, I used my authority to give them a

second chance at life.”

“But you chose favoritism.”

“You protected the wrong person and failed the one who was sincere with you.”

“Because of your own choices, you lost your chance to complete this second-chance mission.”

“Fate can be changed.”

“But some choices can’t be undone.”

“Once a chance is gone, it’s gone.”

“Hannah cannot come back to life again.”
