My Family Gave My Life to My Sister Chapter 01

My Family Gave My Life to My Sister Chapter 01

My sister, Aubrey, and I died in the same car accident.

As we lay dying, the System’s cold voice suddenly rang out of nowhere.

[If you can win over your family, you’ll come back to life.]

From that day on, every bit of favoritism in our family went to Aubrey.

Aubrey casually mentioned that the primary bedroom got better sunlight, and Mom immediately moved into the guest bedroom.

Aubrey said she wanted to be the only daughter, so Dad planned to give me away to other relatives.

Aubrey envied the fact that I’d been with my boyfriend for five years, so one by one, my family pressured me to give him up to her.

I turned to Grant.

“You think so too?”

“Relax.”

“It’s just for show.”

“We just have to give Aubrey what she wants.”

“That’s the only way she’ll survive.”

I jerked back.

“My mission is the same as hers!”

“If I fail the System mission, I’ll die too!”

My entire family looked at me with cold resentment.

“Hannah, seriously?”

“You’ll say anything just to fight Aubrey for attention!”

“If failing the System mission really kills you, then why are you still alive?”

The System’s flat, icy voice rang out.

[Hannah. System mission failed.]

[Immediate erasure initiated.]

After I died, my spirit drifted to Grant’s wedding.

Grant stood there in a dark gray suit, wearing the silver lapel pin I’d searched three different malls to find for him.

He held Aubrey’s hand as they walked, step by step, down the white-rose-lined aisle I’d imagined countless times for myself.

Mom and Dad sat in the front row, tears of relief streaming down their faces.

“Our daughter finally completed the System mission.”

“She doesn’t have to die anymore.”

As the guests cheered, Grant bent down, pulled Aubrey into his arms, and kissed her.

For a moment, memories of our anniversary came rushing back.

I’d spent an entire week preparing everything.

Then Aubrey said one thing, and Grant dropped everything to go camping in the mountains with her to watch a meteor shower.

“We can celebrate our anniversary anytime.”

“But Aubrey has a System mission.”

“If I don’t go with her, she’ll die.”

On my birthday, I’d finally worked up the courage to ask Mom and Dad to have dinner with me.

They said yes.

Then they turned around and went into the city with Aubrey for her singing competition.

My parents normally hated noisy crowds.

That day, they excitedly held up signs with Aubrey’s name on them and cheered for her until their voices went hoarse.

One memory after another flooded my mind.

Even though I was nothing more than a spirit, the ache in my chest still made it hard to breathe.

When the wedding ceremony ended, the guests gradually left.

Aubrey looped her arm through Grant’s and spoke, her voice neither loud nor soft.

“Hannah must still be mad.”

“On such an important day, I was really hoping she would come, but she didn’t.”

Mom’s expression immediately darkened, disappointment and anger written all over her face.

“She’s such a copycat!”

“She sees how sweet and well-behaved Aubrey is, how everyone adores her, and she can’t stand it.”

“She keeps lying about how she’ll die if she fails the System mission.”

“That’s all this is.”

“Another tantrum.”

“Another excuse to get attention and compete with Aubrey.”

I floated nearby, hearing every accusation clearly.

Mom.

I wasn’t lying.

I really was going to die.

Just then, Grant removed the boutonniere from his chest.

A flicker of hesitation crossed his face.

“Maybe… I should go back and talk to her.”

“I’ll explain that the wedding was just part of the System mission.”

“She’ll get it.”

Dad immediately cut him off.

“We raised her for over twenty years.”

“We know her.”

“We’ve spoiled her too much since she was little.”

“Just leave her alone.”

“Let her cool off.”

“She’ll be fine in a couple of days.”

Grant looked like he still wanted to say something.

But Aubrey immediately took his hand and smiled sweetly at him.

“Grant, forget about it.”

“Come on.”

“Let’s go pick out the wedding photos.”

“Everyone’s still waiting.”

He hesitated for two seconds.

In the end, he followed her.

“Fine.”

“Let’s give Hannah some time to cool off.”

I hovered silently in the air, watching the three of them.

Grant hadn’t always been like this.

Before, if I got even a little upset, he’d get worried and spend forever trying to cheer me up.

Anything I said in passing, he’d remember.

But now?

A few words were all it took for them to decide exactly what kind of person I was.

Spoiled.

Dramatic.

Temperamental.

Always taking things too far.

Not one of them noticed the secret, smug smile curling at the corner of sweet, gentle Aubrey’s lips.
