The medical examiner walked in with the report.

His voice wasn’t loud, but every word was clear.

“Based on our examination, Hannah’s time of death was 9:46 p.m. last night.”

Mom swayed on her feet.

Slowly, she turned toward Aubrey.

“Aubrey…”

“Didn’t you just tell us Hannah opened the door, smashed the cake in your face, and called you

names?”

Aubrey’s face instantly went white.

Her whole body began to tremble.

“I-I got it wrong…”

“It wasn’t last night.”

“It was the day before…”

“No, no…”

“It was yesterday afternoon…”

The more she talked, the more flustered she became, tripping over her own words.

Grant had been silent for a long time.

Then he suddenly spoke, his voice completely flat.

“Enough.”

“I have proof.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Grant lowered his eyes and pointed to the small security camera in the corner of the living room.

“I wanted to give Hannah the perfect proposal.”

“So I installed a small security camera in the living room this morning to record the whole thing.”

“We just need to pull up the footage.”

“Then we’ll know the truth.”

Just never thought…”

Before he could finish, Aubrey lunged at him.

She grabbed his arm, tears pouring down her face.

“Grant, don’t watch it!”

“That camera’s broken!”

“It has to be!”

“Even if it recorded anything, you won’t be able to see it clearly!”

“Please, Grant.”

“Don’t do that, okay?”

“I’m begging you!”

In the past, Grant had always softened and given in to Aubrey.

This time, he didn’t hesitate.

He shoved her away.

A moment later, the security footage appeared on the TV.

On the screen, Aubrey stood outside my bedroom holding the crepe cake.

She said a few words to the closed door.

Then she suddenly lifted the cake and smashed it into her own face.

Cream flew everywhere.

She took two steps back.

Gritting her teeth, she slammed her head into the wall.

Thud.

Blood ran down her forehead.

Then she collapsed onto the floor and started screaming and crying, her shrill voice cutting

through the room.

The room went so quiet that even the sound of breathing seemed loud.

Then shocked, horrified whispers broke out among the friends gathered around.

“Oh my God…”

“She did all of that to herself?”

“She hurt herself that badly just to frame her own sister?”

“That’s terrifying!”

“Hannah kept trying to explain, and nobody believed her!”

“It was all a lie from the very beginning!”

The footage was crystal clear.

Grant, Mom, and Dad stared at the screen.

All three stood frozen in place, their faces drained of color.

Aubrey sprawled on the floor, desperately trying to defend herself.

“I didn’t lie!”

“I really didn’t! It’s true”

“If I don’t complete the System mission, I’ll really die!”

“The System trial is real!”

She looked up through her tears, panic all over her face.

“I was jealous of Hannah!”

“Everyone always favored her.”

“I was scared that if I died, no one would even remember me.”

“I just wanted to hide it from you at first.”

“Once I knew I was really safe, I was going to tell you the truth.”

“I never meant to get Hannah killed…”

Before she could finish, a bouquet of white roses suddenly struck her in the face.

Petals scattered across the floor.

Grant’s chest heaved.

Tears ran down his face.

“Aubrey…”

“Why did you do this?”

“Why did you lie to us?”

Mom was already sobbing, her entire body shaking.

“Aubrey, what did we ever do to you?!”

“We’ve given in to you your whole life!”

“How could you be this cruel?!”

“How could you get Hannah killed?!”

Dad stood nearby, pounding his chest again and again.

“Oh God, It’s my fault…”

“It’s all my fault…”

“We were blind, completely.”

“We played favorites. We ruined her.”

“We were so damn stupid.”

“We killed my Hannah with our own hands…”

I floated in midair, quietly watching the three of them, devastated and drowning in regret.

I reached out with my transparent hand and gently brushed over their brows and eyes, comforting

them in silence.

“It’s okay, Mom.”

“Dad.”

“Grant.”

“I don’t blame you anymore.”

“It’s over.”

This ridiculous misunderstanding.

This betrayal that had cut me to the bone.

It all ended here.

The police officers took in everything that had happened and eventually closed the case according

to procedure.

My death was still officially ruled the result of a drunk-driving crash.

The driver responsible for the crash was held fully responsible.

With that, the case was settled.

Eventually, the commotion died down.

Everyone left.

Mom was sobbing so hard she could barely speak.

Her voice had gone hoarse.

“If the System gave Hannah one chance to come back to life…”

“Then we’ll beg it for another.”

Dad straightened up and wiped his face.

“Yes.”

“We’ll beg the System.”

“We’ll beg it to give Hannah back to us.”
