My Cheating Boyfriend Thought I Was Obedient—So I Married Someone Else Chapter 10

Back at the office. I didn’t lift my head the whole morning.

A massive project sat in my hands. The final contract stage. I couldn’t stop for a second.

Before meeting the client, I downed two full cans of iced coffee. Needed my sleep-deprived brain to

stay sharp.

Their company was downtown. Someone was already waiting when we arrived.

The presentation and negotiations went smoothly. The man who signed off on the contract was

young. Their CEO. Name was Fitch.

I glanced at him. Something about his manner felt familiar.

Then Kael walked through the door and it clicked. That second-generation trust-fund energy. Definitely from their circle.

Fitch ran his company pretty casually. Let outsiders like Kael wander into client meetings.

They greeted each other. From start to finish, Kael didn’t look at me once.

Fitch asked him to check out the project proposal. Kael sat down and flipped through it page by page. Taking his time.

I steadied my breathing. My palms were slick with sweat.

I knew these people better than anyone. Whether for show or friendship-

If Kael said one word against this deal today, it wouldn’t go through.

This was my last project before I planned to resign. The strongest line on my resume. I couldn’t lose

I locked

my eyes on Kael’s hands. My mind spun through backup plan after backup plan.

Just as my nerves were about to snap, Kael shut the file with a clean thud.

He kept it short. “Not bad. You’ll make money on this, Fitch.”

Fitch roared with laughter and invited him out for drinks.

I let out a breath. In the gap, Kael finally glanced at me.

The meeting ended. I was walking behind when he fell into step beside me.

“A minute ago, did you think I was here to burn your crops and salt your fields?” Kael was smiling

and nodding at Fitch’s staff as he spoke.

He slid a look at me. “I don’t think much of your job. But torching someone’s livelihood? That’s low. People like you actually have to work for a living. I’ve got some principles.”

I stopped. Turned to face him. “You think I should be grateful right now?”

Without him, I wouldn’t have even been in that room. Who was he to act like some generous god

“That’s not what I meant.” He clicked his tongue. “You’re back from your trip. Where’d you put your stuff? Oh right-the house had a break-in. Forgot to tell you the new code. Why didn’t you ask me? Earning peanuts and still this busy.”

Kael rarely bent like this. Offering us both a way out.

Before, I would’ve played along. Things would’ve gone back to how they were.

But I was exhausted. Couldn’t perform those love scenes anymore.

He could see it. So he kept talking. “All those people you didn’t like. I deleted them-”

His phone rang mid-sentence. He silenced it fast.

I let out a dry, humorless laugh. Said nothing. Started walking toward the exit.

He grabbed my arm. “Come on, Elara. Too much drama stops being cute. I’m trying here. What else do you want?”

I met his eyes. Dead calm. “Nothing. I just need to remind you.”

“I’ve already broken up with you. Unilaterally. Stop pretending you don’t know.”

No point saying anything else.

His phone rang again at the perfect moment. He answered it in front of me. A sweet female voice I didn’t recognize leaked through.

Maybe the college girl Jax mentioned. Maybe someone else. Who cared.

Kael looked straight into my eyes and said every word into the phone.

“Hold tight. I’m on my way.”
