My Cheating Boyfriend Thought I Was Obedient—So I Married Someone Else Chapter 09

I couldn’t even deal with my tangled mess of a heart. I had to sprint straight to the airport for a

business trip.

When I got back from my trip, I stood at the front door with my suitcase. The code wouldn’t work.

I thought I’d remembered it wrong. Kept trying until the system warned me one more attempt

would lock it. I gave up.

Kael had changed the passcode. And if I had to guess, I was probably already blocked,

I tried sending a message. Rejected. Couldn’t reach him.

He’d blocked me before. After our worst fight. I refused to bend.

He deleted every way I had to contact him. Later, I regretted it so badly I tried everything. Even opened new phone lines just to reach him.

In the end, Jax took pity on me. Brought me to see him.

Kael probably thought this time would be the same. That I’d crawl back like I always did.

I stepped back with my suitcase. Looked up at the house.

In all these years with Kael, I’d never been too proud.

Everything he gave me, I took it. The clothes and shoes and bags I couldn’t use, I sold off for cash

every year.

Kael knew. He just didn’t care about pocket change.

To make my commute easier, he’d bought me two apartments. For a while, he even lived with me there. I poured myself into every corner of those places. Made them comfortable. Made them a

home.

But he couldn’t stand residential units like that. So I followed him here. Into this mansion.

We had good memories inside these walls. Most of our time, at least.

The year I fractured my foot, he looked after me for six months. A man who never lifted a finger learned to make soup.

Every single day, he did my physical therapy himself. His technique got better than the doctor’s.

When I got bored, he’d carry me up and down the stairs. Outside to the yard for sun. Around the

back to watch the swans.

I tightened my grip on the suitcase handle and turned to walk away.

My phone rang. Jax again.

“Locked out, huh?” He sounded more sober today. “He found out about your blind date.”

“Didn’t know you had it in you. First suicide, now another guy.” He laughed. “And here I thought you were just a boring little nerd.”

He shifted tone. “But Elara, I’m not here to stir things up.”

“Plenty of good guys out there. You don’t gotta tie yourself to one man.”

“You saw the picture, right? He’s trying to break you. Got some college girl parked right next to

him.”

“I’m really not trying to start anything. But today it’s the seat next to him. Tomorrow? She’s in his

lap.”

Jax had always been like this. Ever since I met him.

Sometimes he stood on Kael’s side, sniping at me with sarcasm.

Other times he’d hint at things, talk trash about Kael, never quite clear.

But this time, he actually made a good point.

So I answered him politely. “You’re right.”

I hung up before he could respond.
