People called me the good girl. And for five years, I lived up to it.

Every whisper about Kael Voss and his women? I choked it down. I stayed quiet.

Until the day I found stockings and lingerie in his hotel suite that weren’t mine.

He didn’t look guilty. He looked bored. A lazy smile pulled at his mouth.

“Go be a good girl and check out for me.”

His friends took bets on how long I’d last this time.

Kael propped his chin on his hand, indifferent. “She’s too sweet. She’ll be over it in two days.”

Just like before. I’d crawl back, begging him not to leave.

What Kael didn’t know was this. Girls like me, the good ones, follow the rules when it’s time to get married.

So while he was busy feeling satisfied with himself, I found my courage and asked the handsome stranger at my blind date one question.

“Kids take my last name. You okay with that?”

Kael texted me the room number. I pressed the doorbell for what felt like forever. No answer.

I dropped my hand and leaned against the wall, shifting my bag from underneath.

My shoulder ached. Fourteen inches of laptop inside, dragging me down.

The door finally swung open.

Kael stood there in nothing but a towel. Water still dripped down his bare chest, tracing the hard lines of muscle.

He braced one hand against the doorframe and frowned.

“You couldn’t wait until tomorrow?”

I clutched my bag with both hands and looked up at him. “Sorry. A project bug came up last minute. I had to work late.”

Kael dropped his arm and walked inside. “That joke of a job. How much do they even pay you? Quit already.”

I slipped in before the hotel door clicked shut. Then I froze.

Kael had a suite. The entryway stretched a long way to the actual room. I turned the corner and saw it.

Torn stockings on the couch. Lingerie scattered across the floor. A thong with strings so thin they barely existed.

I knew Kael liked to play. I knew he never stopped seeing other women, even when I was around.

I just always told myself, if I don’t see it, it’s not real.

I made myself blind to Kael and anyone else. What I didn’t see couldn’t hurt me.

Like a fish with a seven-second memory. That’s how long I let myself forget.

I looked at Kael. He was already leaning against the bar, watching me. A drink in his hand. Water ran faintly from the bathroom.

No panic in his eyes. No guilt.

“You got here too late.” He shrugged. His voice stayed flat.

I gripped my bag harder. If I let go, the laptop would crash to the floor.

Nearly two thousand dollars. Half a month’s salary.
