My Cheating Boyfriend Thought I Was Obedient—So I Married Someone Else Chapter 08

On the night of Jax’s birthday, I didn’t show.

Kael didn’t reach out either. Jax, however, called me way past midnight. “Elara. Cold as ice. You two are fighting, fine. But skipping my birthday?”

He’d definitely been drinking. Slurring his words.

“Throw your fit and get it over with. You’re putting on such a big show. You really gonna break up

with him?”

“You bookworm. You really think you can walk away? Don’t come crying to me later, begging me to get him on the phone for you-”

“You know what he’s like. You think you lasted five years because you’re special? It’s because you’re sweet and you don’t make trouble.”

I was still at the office. Working late. I pulled at the corner of my mouth and muttered “Happy birthday” before hanging up.

The next day, I sat in a coffee shop. The man across from me wouldn’t stop talking.

I looked him over. Decent enough face. Clean-cut. Fair skin.

“I hear you make around two grand a month now. But private companies like yours aren’t nearly as stable as my government job.”

I sipped my coffee. Technically, it was $2,215 after taxes. Not counting quarterly bonuses. But Kael always called it a joke of a paycheck. Said it didn’t cover one of his meals.

I didn’t speak. The man kept going.

“Your job makes you work a lot of overtime though, right? After marriage, someone has to take care of the home. Have you thought about switching jobs?”

I set my cup down. My voice stayed flat. “Just so you know, any kids would take my last name. I’m an only child, so the Miller line kind of stops here if they don’t.”

He looked stunned. “Your mom never mentioned that. Besides, I’m an only child too. Maybe you could have two kids and we-”

Suddenly it all felt absurd. If Kael could see this scene-

He’d mock me for sure. Said I’d left him and found nothing but trash.

I had to get back to the office. My blind date tried to stop me. “I really like you. The kid thing-we

can talk about it later—”

I looked at him again. His face had somehow turned almost grotesque.

I tanked the blind date. My mom’s call came hunting me down the next second. “What were you thinking? Why would you bring up the kids out of nowhere?”

“Since when did I ever demand the children take your name?”

I didn’t have time to soothe her. I muttered something and hung up.
