My Boyfriend Played Broke to Fool Me, So I Vanished Chapter 05

After they left, they left behind a mess stretching everywhere.

The owner cursed as he cleaned up.

I sat there, mouth open, sucking cold air through my teeth to ease the pain in my face.

Tears spilled from my eyes—just a physical reaction.

The owner barely glanced at me. He roared with disgust, “Get off the table right now, you jinx! First day on the job and you bring trouble. I knew it—a young girl willing to work here must be carrying debt.”

I propped myself up on my arms and climbed off the table.

I casually grabbed the silk scarf Evan had given me and pressed it against the wound. The pain made me suck in a sharp breath of cold air, but I didn’t care anymore.

Harboring a sliver of hope, I reached for the broom.

But the owner snapped at me, “Drop it! You don’t think you can still work here, do you? Get out, now. Stop being an eyesore.”

Just as I expected… it was like this.

I held back the stinging in my eyes. I was about to leave. Then I turned back.

I swallowed my pride. “Boss, I did a trial shift today. You have to pay me something at least.”

Blood was still dripping down my cheek.

The owner didn’t react at all. “You ruined my shop and you still want wages?”

“Get out, now!”

The other workers joined in cursing at me.

I couldn’t stay.

I had no money at all.

Couldn’t go to the hospital.

I walked along the road. Passed a convenience store.

The owner’s TV was playing news of Evan and that girl attending an event.

The owner’s daughter was adding commentary.

“Mr. Chase was stabbed by some girl once. They say the girl has mental issues. But Evan told everyone not to bother her. Such a good guy.”

“Miss Luna and Mr. Chase are such a perfect match. But recently there’s been posts online saying that girl’s been harassing Evan. Her photos have been leaked. I mean, she’s actually kind of pretty—why would she do something like that?”

In the eyes of the outside world, that relationship between Evan and me was just me chasing him one-sidedly.

He became a victim.

And my personal information had been spread across the entire internet without my knowledge.

My tears spilled over the wound.

It hurt even more.

I should buy a tube of ointment.

But I didn’t even have a few dozen dollars for ointment.

I hid miserably under the eaves of a street corner.

A fine rain began to fall outside.

The air was thick and murky.

I covered my face and couldn’t help but weep.

Back then, I’d thought my parents were interfering too deeply in my life.

So I ran away from home in secret.

I never imagined I’d suffer the greatest hardship of my life.

It turned out they’d been right. Without power or influence, you can’t even stand on your own two feet in this world.

Evan had toyed with me, crushed and twisted me however he pleased.

And he could still walk away looking like the good guy.

I wanted so badly to go home.

But my parents no longer wanted me.

The calls I made to them rang with endless, drawn-out beeps and no one picked up.

Just as I thought…

I figured my wound was starting to get infected.

Because my whole body was heating up. My head was growing dizzy and heavy.

But one thread had been pulled completely clear.

There was one more person…

He might be able to help me.

With trembling hands, I opened my phone and dialed that familiar number.

The call connected in one second.

My voice was barely a breath. “I’m… I’m dying.”

…

The next day, the assistant rushed frantically into Evan’s office.

“Mr. Chase, Miss Quinn has disappeared from Riverside.”

Evan looked up, displeased.

“A grown woman just vanishes?”

The assistant braced himself and answered, “Yes. No surveillance footage captured Miss Quinn’s movements at all. She’s truly, completely gone.”
