My Boyfriend Played Broke to Fool Me, So I Vanished Chapter 04

A flicker of barely perceptible panic crossed Evan’s face.

“How did you know?”

Seeing Evan admit it, the girl’s grip on his arm tightened.

Her voice went a little dry. “The guys told me. They showed me the news too. Were you afraid I’d find out?”

He cleared his throat. “Of course not. That woman left this scar on my arm. I’m here to get even.”

“Get even?”

Her eyes swept over me from top to bottom.

“How are you planning to get even?”

Evan wrapped his arm around the girl’s shoulders, smiling casually. “Look at her. A rich girl reduced to wiping tables for a bunch of street thugs. Isn’t this the greatest revenge?”

Something in my chest was suddenly stabbed with pain.

I picked up the “rag” he’d thrown away and briskly wiped the table.

I acted as if I hadn’t heard a word of their conversation. I held out the menu. “Ready to order?”

A complicated expression surfaced on Evan’s face. In his eyes was the disappointment of anger at someone who refuses to fight for themselves.

“You really were born with the cheap bones of a servant!”

He knocked the menu out of my hand and onto the ground.

“Don’t ever let me see you again!”

He walked out with her on his arm.

“Let’s go. We’re not eating here.”

The two figures drifted slowly away.

But their voices still drifted clearly to my ears. “Evan, how could you ever have been with someone like that before?”

Evan glanced back at me without thinking.

His gaze was fleeting.

“Back then I was playing broke. Needed a partner. It was just for fun.”

“She was alone too, so I got a few thugs to stage a hero-saving-the-damsel scene. And she bought it.”

My heart ached with one spasm after another.

The last sliver of illusion I’d held about Evan shattered in that moment.

So that’s how it was…

No wonder I’d always felt the Evan I first met and the Evan who came later were two different people.

Evan would never have risked his neck for a girl being harassed outside a convenience store after her shift.

To make me believe it, he’d even had the thugs he hired slash his arm twice.

Just superficial wounds.

But back then, seeing that scene, I believed everything.

With red eyes, I said I would take responsibility.

He just waved his hand like some tortured artist, saying he didn’t really want to live anyway and that being useful to society was better than dying outright.

I was terrified. I ran to that shabby rental of his every day to make sure he was still alive.

Later, when he said his lease was up, I took it all on myself and said I’d support him.

So the beginning of that poverty-stricken love had been a setup from the start.

And I’d been trapped deep inside the game while Evan watched me struggle and laughed.

The job didn’t allow me to drown in my emotions for long.

I pulled myself together.

Near closing time, a group of men in black tank tops with tattoos on their arms stormed in.

They were menacing and ferocious, clubs and bats in their hands.

The leader studied my face for a long moment. He seemed to confirm something.

Then he raised his hand. “Smash it!”

Clubs hammered against the glass tables. The crisp sound of shattering echoed endlessly.

Customers were all scared away. The owner tried to grab the leader and beg for mercy.

The leader shoved the owner aside too.

In the chaos, I realized—this was the only job I’d been able to find. If I caused the owner this much loss because of me, I would definitely lose this job.

I just wanted to make the owner’s losses a little smaller.

Even if it was just one table.

I dropped to my knees. I grabbed the arm of a nearby thug. Begged him. “Please, I’m begging you. Take it out on me. Don’t hurt innocent people.”

I picked the wrong person.

This man was far too strong.

When he flung me away, I flew through the air. My whole body crashed onto another glass table.

A shard of glass stabbed into my face.

Blood gushed out wave after wave.

It stained the tabletop red.

Amid the screams, they stopped.

The leader raised his hand. His men immediately halted.

“This is just a warning. Don’t touch people you shouldn’t.”
