My Boyfriend Played Broke to Fool Me, So I Vanished Chapter 02

In an instant, the sky collapsed and the earth split open.

I staggered. My face went gray.

No. No, that couldn’t be right. My parents wouldn’t—they couldn’t—

Evan looked smug. Like he’d finally found my weak spot.

“Nora, if you hadn’t gone to prison, I wouldn’t even have known you came from money. If you’d told me sooner, we could have been together openly. But now? You’ve got a record. Your family’s disowned you. The only place for you is as my side piece.”

His voice faded like smoke.

I was drowning in the grief of losing my parents. Tears poured down my face, but I barely felt them.

That’s why they never visited. That’s why I never heard from them.

I wanted to tell them I was sorry. That I shouldn’t have run away.

But now, those words would never get the chance to be spoken.

Evan’s expression shifted. Maybe he’d meant to threaten me into submission.

But seeing me cry like a broken sieve, a trace of reluctance flickered in his eyes.

He let go of my wrist.

Instead, he pulled me into a hug.

“It’s okay. You have me now. You’re not alone.”

The self-righteousness of it made me sick.

I shoved him off with every last ounce of strength I had.

He didn’t seem to expect me to still have that kind of force. He stumbled back a few steps.

“I’d rather starve than go back with you!”

I ran, my eyes red, terrified he’d chase after me.

I was done with Evan Chase. The man who’d dragged me into hell.

But he just called after me, his voice calm and amused.

“Then let’s see. How long can you survive on your own?”

It wasn’t an idle threat.

People with records don’t get decent jobs.

Even the KTV where I used to work part-time turned me away with a dismissive wave.

But I had to make it on my own.

I was so hungry I could barely stand. I passed a street-side grill. The smell of barbecue hit me.

I clutched my stomach and asked the owner if he needed help.

Maybe business was really that good. Maybe they were truly desperate for hands. The owner didn’t ask a single question. He agreed to let me work there.

Even my lodging was taken care of.

But on my first day, a familiar Maybach parked at the alley entrance.

Amid the murmuring customers, I saw Evan walking toward me, that half-smile on his face.
