My Army Captain Husband Posed as Another Woman’s Husband—I Jailed Him Chapter 08

My Army Captain Husband Posed as Another Woman’s Husband—I Jailed Him Chapter 08

I woke from the deepest darkness of despair.

The searing pain still lingered in my body, but the drugs had dulled it, like a layer of cotton between me and the agony.

The moment I opened my eyes, a tall, familiar figure stumbled into the room.

Aiden.

He was wearing a sterile gown. In just a few days, he’d already lost weight.

When he saw me lying there in that hospital bed, surrounded by tubes, his already red eyes turned even redder.

“Naomi…” His voice was hoarse.

He was the last person I wanted to see.

But I couldn’t move, so I just closed my eyes to show my refusal.

“Naomi, please look at me…” He dropped humbly to his knees beside the hospital bed, begging over and over.

“You’ve been unconscious for five whole days, and I’ve spent every single one pacing anxiously outside.”

“I’m afraid to close my eyes. Terrified that if I do, you’ll vanish from my world. Leave for good…” He reached

out and touched my hand, trembling, as if he needed to feel for himself that I was real. “I was so scared you’d

leave me the way Enzo did…”

At the sound of Enzo’s name, my whole body jolted.

All the memories from before I passed out came flooding back.

I started thrashing, screaming, tearing out the IV needle. The monitor beside my bed let out a piercing alarm.

“Naomi! Naomi, calm down!” To keep me from hurting myself, Aiden threw himself at me and pinned me

against his chest.

Doctors on standby burst through the door and tore into Aiden without mercy. “What did you say to her? She

just got resuscitated. She’s at her weakest. And you’re provoking her like this?”

Aiden’s lips trembled. The captain who never took no for an answer lowered his head in shame, like a

schoolboy who’d been caught misbehaving.

They shoved him out of the room. But before he left, his eyes stayed locked on me, desperate and frantic “Naomi, I’ll come back when you’re better. Please don’t give up on me.”

Dr. Rivera stood by my bed, adjusting the drip rate. Then she said, “Are you going to forgive Aiden? He really

has been remorseful these past few days. Melody came to see him several times, and he cursed her out

every time. He even had her sent to jail.”

“He waited for three days without sleeping or eating. Half his hair turned white. He coughed up blood and told me not to say anything.”

“Also, while you were unconscious, the investigation team interviewed everyone involved. They’ve done a preliminary review. The case is about to be formally submitted for trial. The collective hearing is in five days.”

“Aiden won’t just be demoted and removed from his post. He might even…”

“You’re the victim. If you plead for leniency, it could still make a difference. Can you really stand by and watch Aiden die?”

My eyes blurred with tears.

I seemed to see Enzo’s sweet, innocent smile and hear his bright, playful giggles.

I turned my face away and said nothing.

Dr. Rivera smiled. “Looks like you’ve finally come around.”

Yes. I’d finally come around.

But it came too late. Too late to save Enzo’s pure, innocent life.

With the help of the imported speciality drugs Aiden had specially approved, I recovered enough to sit up a little and speak again.

Aiden came to the hospital every day, looking at me with those pleading eyes, but he never dared to come close.

One day, he was running a high fever, his steps unsteady. Still, he tried to act normally.

He smiled and touched my forehead. “Good. This medicine is working. You look much better.”

“Don’t touch me.” Those were the first words I’d said to him in days.

Aiden froze. His mouth twisted bitterly. “Naomi, I know I was wrong. I’ve already found out everything. Melody was faking her illness the whole time. She bribed the doctors and made up her condition, those ridiculous treatments too.”

“Damn it… I was completely blind.” His voice cracked with pain and despair. “But Naomi, I swear nothing happened between us. That prenatal checkup the other day was fake, too. I honestly thought her illness was making her hallucinate…”

“Melody has already been expelled from the research institute. For falsifying research, bribery, false accusations, and assault. She’s in jail now. She’s looking at at least twenty years.”

“I know that what she did means nothing compared to what I did. I’m the real monster…”

I let out a soft laugh.

Aiden grabbed onto it like a lifeline. He took my hand urgently. “Naomi, does that make you feel even a little better…”

“So what?” I cut him off. Just the emotion of it made me short of breath. “Are you trying to prove how brilliant and decisive you are now? How you can finally see the truth and set things right? How you’ve finally deigned to clear my name?”

“No.” His voice was low, pleading. “I just want to tell you that I was wrong. So wrong. I’m not asking for your forgiveness. Just please don’t leave me…”

“I’m a stubborn, reckless bastard who can’t tell right from wrong! I dragged you into this mess. And I let Enzo die all alone… I’ll keep begging for your forgiveness. If not now, then in a year. If not a year, then five years. Ten years.”

“I won’t forgive you,” I said slowly.

The light in Aiden’s eyes faded.

“The Naomi who forgave you time and again for your shoddy lies, the foolish girl who kept throwing herself at you despite endless hurts, is long dead.”

“Even this broken body clinging to life won’t last much longer. My only wish now is to have nothing to do with you, in life and in death.”

Aiden forced himself to hold it together and left the room.

I caught the sound of his muffled sobs outside the door, raw, ragged growls trapped deep in his throat.

I simply closed my eyes and drifted into a spring dream where Enzo was right beside me.
