I stayed silent.

The truth was, I did not think there was any need for us to meet.

But Cole had always been the type who would never stop until he got what he wanted.

Since he had managed to find my phone number, finding me would not be difficult.

He lifted his head and froze for a moment when his eyes met mine.

His face looked tired, and the old confidence and sharpness were gone.

I walked right past him and pushed open the café door.

He reached out as if he wanted to touch me, but I stepped aside with a cold elegance.

His hand froze in midair, and something unreadable flickered through his eyes.

After we sat down, he forced out an ugly smile. His voice was so hoarse it sounded like his throat had been scraped with sandpaper.

“Maya, I looked for you for a long time.”

I stirred the coffee in front of tue and said nothing.

He coughed twice and continued.

“Have you been well? I heard you joined a university here. Is work going smoothly?”

“Cole, my time is valuable. I don’t have any to waste catching up with you. Say what you came to say.’

Things had ended too badly between us.

I did not think we could sit here and reminisce like old friends.

When he sensed my impatience, his eyes suddenly reddened.

In the past, I had always had endless patience for him.

Whether he was talking about the pressure of managing the pack or rambling about something completely pointless, I always smiled, answered, and responded to him right away.

Now, I would not even listen to a simple question from him.

He suddenly grabbed my hand, his voice trembling.

“Maya, do you hate me that much?”

“You disappeared completely and didn’t even give me a chance to explain. How can your heart be so cruel?”

“After all these years together, you can just throw us away?”

I pulled my hand free and smiled faintly.

“When you slept with Rachel, why didn’t you remember all those years we had together?”

Cole opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

“Stop looking for me,” I said. “Let’s part cleanly.”

He shook his head and begged in a low voice.

“Maya, I know everything was my fault. I’ve already severed the bond with Rachel.”

“I promise I’ll never make that mistake again. Give me one more chance, okay? Just one. Please.”

“I only want to make up for the hurt I caused you.”

I looked at his broken expression and felt nothing.

Only irritation.

“I gave you plenty of chances. You were the one who chose Rachel over and over again.

“Cole, you were selfish. You enjoyed the wholehearted love I gave you, but you were also addicted to the thrill she gave you.”

“You don’t regret what you did. You just can’t accept that the person who once revolved around you actually left.”

His face stiffened, and he instinctively tried to argue.

I cut him off directly.

“Cole, I’m already bonded. You know there is no possibility between us anymore.”

He knew me better than anyone.

Once I made up my mind, no one could change it.

Not even him.

The light in Cole’s eyes went out little by little.

He tugged at the corner of his mouth, and tears fell again.

I stood up to leave.

When I passed beside him, I stopped.

“If you truly want to make it up to me, then disappear from my world. Never show up again.”

His face turned pale, and he lowered his head.

I did not look at him again.

I pushed the door open and left.

The next time I heard news of him, he had died of stomach cancer.
