Married At 9AM, Divorced At 10AM Chapter 17

Jake’s eyes were bloodshot. “What do you know? I wasn’t relying on my family either these three years. I was struggling too—”

“What did you struggle for?” Megan stared at him.

“You struggled for three years, and all you accomplished was her losing her baby and signing the surgery consent form alone.”

“You struggled for three years, and all you accomplished was her marrying someone else. Jake, your ‘struggle’ got you exactly this?”

Jake’s lips trembled. “I didn’t… I didn’t mean to lie to her… I never actually wanted to lose her… I just—”

“Just what?” Megan’s words cut like knives. “Just thought she was easy to manipulate? Thought she wouldn’t leave? Thought she deserved to wait for you?”

Jake’s tears finally fell.

He sobbed uncontrollably, snot and tears streaming down his face, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “How could she… how could she not want me anymore…”

He crouched down, bracing his hands on the floor. “She said she would wait for me. She said so!”

Megan looked down at him with no sympathy in her eyes whatsoever.

“I almost forgot to tell you something.”

She pulled a document out of her bag and threw it on the ground in front of him.

“Emma has authorized me to handle the division of your marital assets. Every penny you owe her, you’re going to pay.”

“Marital assets? We were only married for one day—”

“One day is still within the marriage.” Megan cut him off.

“Between February fourteenth and February fifteenth, your net worth increased by tens of millions of dollars. Do you need me to list every single transaction for you?”

“Emma doesn’t want your cheap romantic gestures anymore. She wants something real.”

“And another thing, even if marital assets legally only apply to that one day, she has three years of transfer records for the debts she paid off for you and the money she fronted on your behalf.”

“Unjust enrichment. Think you can get away with that?”

Jake’s mouth hung open; he couldn’t form a single word.

“See you in court.”

Megan turned and walked away.
