He crouched there like someone the whole world had forgotten.

Before he went home, his father called him.

“Have you lost your goddamn mind? Causing a scene at a West family wedding? Do you have any idea what kind of status the West family has in Portsville?”

“You’ve completely disgraced me! Do you know how many people saw you grabbing the bride on that stage? Forget about ever doing business in Portsville again.”

His father paused to catch his breath, his voice trembling with rage.

“Turns out the person you got your license with on Valentine’s Day was Mr. Carson’s daughter!”

“So what if their family doesn’t have money right now? Do you know how much that technique is worth?”

“We were one step away. One single step away from having the same standing as the West family! But no, you had to go and marry a treasure like that and divorce her in a single day.”

Jake gripped his phone, his face pale.

He remembered the things Emma had said to him.

“My parents said whoever marries me is basically getting a gold mine.”

She really had said it many times.

Every time, he would laugh and ruffle her hair. “You? A gold mine? Figure out how to take care of yourself first.”

She never got mad. She would just mutter, “You’ll understand someday.”

He understood now.

But she had already married someone else.

His father’s yelling continued, but Jake heard another voice in the background, faintly. “Dad, the car is ready.”

He froze.

He didn’t know that voice well, but it wasn’t completely unfamiliar either.

“Dad, who’s that?”

The line went quiet for a second.

His father’s voice took on an impatient, matter-of-fact tone.

“You’ve been gone for three years. I couldn’t just sit around doing nothing.”

“Dylan’s more reliable than you.”

Jake’s hand shook as he held the phone.

That was his father’s illegitimate son.
