Married At 9AM, Divorced At 10AM Chapter 02

I looked around the place he called “home.”

It wasn’t big, but it felt cozy.

The furniture was mostly secondhand, most of it in decent shape. I had hunted for every piece on marketplace apps, staying up late to snag the best deals.

When I first moved to Fairhaven from Portsville, I still had some savings left.

Then he said he couldn’t make his credit card payments. I couldn’t stand seeing him so stressed, so I transferred him money bit by bit. My savings slowly disappeared.

On the wall hung a handwritten note titled “Household Budget Plan.”

It said we had to save a thousand dollars a month. The note read: [Saving up for my girl’s wedding gifts.]

My phone buzzed.

A sweet female voice asked, “Hi, are you HappyGoLucky? That’s your username on the marketplace, right?”

“You bought a crib from me. Do you mind picking it up? I’m worried it might get damaged in the car, and I want you to have a good experience.”

My heart skipped a beat.

The crib was only eighty-eight dollars. It was imported solid oak and looked almost new.

Afraid that the seller might change her mind, I said, “I’ll come right now.”

On the way there, I thought a lot. I would wait for him to come home tonight and have a real conversation.

We were already older than most people when they get married.

Since we already got the license, maybe we didn’t need to get divorced. We could skip the wedding.

I had planned to surprise him with the crib that night as a new beginning for us.

But he had left too quickly that morning. I didn’t get a chance to tell him.

When I got to the address, the seller called again. “My husband will bring it down. Look for a guy in a navy-blue T-shirt, about six feet one.”

I barely said “okay” before Jake walked right into my line of sight.

I thought he was here to make a delivery and almost called out to him.

Then I saw what he was wearing. And the crib in his arms.

I covered my mouth and ducked behind a tree.

He looked around and pulled out his phone. “Babe, where’s that buyer you mentioned? I don’t see anyone.”

Babe? I was confused. We had just gotten our marriage license that morning. Who was he calling babe?

I looked around the neighborhood. It was called The Willows, the most expensive part of the city.

My mind went blank. I ran all the way back to the apartment.

I sat on the couch and stared at the marriage certificate for a long time.

If he had just gotten a marriage license with me, then the woman he called “babe” couldn’t be his legal wife.

A thought popped into my head.

Was he seeing a rich woman to fund our future together?
