He jumped up onto the stage and grabbed her wrist.

“Come with me. This isn’t where you belong.”

Emma didn’t struggle. She just looked down at his hand gripping her wrist. “Then is this where you belong?”

That made Jake pause for a moment.

Right. He was just a broke delivery driver. How could he possibly be at a place like this?

“I…” He couldn’t explain.

“Let go.”

“No.” His voice was shaking. “Emma, listen to me. From now on, we don’t have to struggle anymore. I have money now. I—”

“Jake Morrison.” She lifted her head and said his full name.

Jake froze.

She used to talk to him with a smile, or anger, or a playful whine.

Never like this, like she was talking to a complete stranger.

“We’re already divorced.”

Jake’s grip loosened. “No, that’s not right… that was—”

“You pretended to be broke for three years just so your family would

accept your childhood sweetheart, didn’t you?”

She looked at him, and there wasn’t even a trace of disappointment in her eyes.

“Now you’ve gotten what you wanted. And I’ve gotten married. Isn’t that a happy ending?”

Happy ending?

No. Not happy.

The happy ending he had pictured was giving Sophia the title of wife and giving Emma the warmth of his love.

He just couldn’t give her a piece of paper. He never wanted to lose her.

“Emma, listen to me. Sophia and I aren’t—”

“Mr. Morrison.” Nicholas’s hand landed on Jake’s shoulder. “Please take your hand off her.”

Jake didn’t.

He stared at Emma, his eyes red. “Are you blaming me? For divorcing you on February 15th? For—”

“I don’t blame you.”

Emma cut him off. She smiled, very faintly. “I just don’t love you anymore.”
