He pulled the car to the side of the road and got out to smoke a cigarette.

The February wind bit at his skin, cold, sharp, and irritating.

He remembered meeting Emma, also in February, on a day just as cold.

That was the day he had cut ties with his family.

His family’s rivals immediately sent someone to corner him in an alley. Three men cornered him, punching and kicking.

Emma had walked by carrying a bag of oranges. She froze for two seconds, then screamed and charged at them, swinging the plastic bag.

While she swung, she shouted, “I’ve already called the police.”

The men swore under their breath about bad luck and scattered.

She crouched down next to him, her voice trembling. “Are… are you okay?”

He didn’t know her then.

All he could think was that this girl was scared out of her mind, yet she still rushed in faster than anyone.

The truth was, those men were just trying to scare him. They wouldn’t have actually done anything serious.

Later, she took him back to her apartment.

She picked out an orange, peeled it, and held a slice to his mouth.
“Here. Eat something sweet. It won’t hurt as much.”

He looked at her, and suddenly his eyes stung.

Twenty-six years old, and no one had ever sat with him after he got beaten up. No one had ever failed to yell at him for causing trouble or call him useless. Instead, she crouched down and peeled him an orange.

His parents had always been too busy with their own lives to pay him any attention.

Even Sophia, who had grown up with him, would only cry about it afterward. She never dared to stand in front of him.

Only this stranger, this girl he had never met before, had grabbed a bag of oranges and charged at three grown men.

That was how they started.

Later, when he pursued her, he couldn’t quite say why.

Maybe it was for his plan to force his family to give in, or maybe it was just for the fun of it.

Or maybe… he stopped himself from thinking further.
