Married At 9AM, Divorced At 10AM Chapter 09

Nicholas didn’t stop.

Jake instinctively went after him.

What Nicholas had just said was too jumbled. He couldn’t piece it together.

But something felt off.

Turn him straight… divorced…

“Jake! Surprise!” Someone suddenly jumped out, blocking his path.

“We brought Sophia! Two happy occasions in one day. You two should go ahead and get your license too!”

Sophia Reed stood at the bottom of the steps in a red dress, smiling brightly.

Jake’s head spun.

He shot a nervous glance toward the county building entrance and practically growled, “Are you trying to ruin everything? Emma hasn’t left yet.”

Liam jumped back. “No way? She’s not leaving after the divorce? What is this, a company retreat? We even took the long way around.”

Jake didn’t respond.

He walked over and put his arm around Sophia’s shoulder.

My parents want me to bring my wife home to the old house. Let’s go right now.”

Sophia shoved his arm away, her eyes red. “What do you mean, Jake? You called me all the way out here, and now you’re sending me away?”

He gave her an appeasing smile. “The old man finally gave in. If we don’t go back now, he might change his mind. Don’t you want to seize the opportunity?”

She turned away with a frustrated sigh, which meant she agreed.

Jake breathed a sigh of relief.

The black Mercedes turned onto the main road.

That uneasy feeling never went away.

He shook his head, trying to push aside the thoughts that had nothing to do with him.

What he needed to focus on now was how to marry Sophia properly and securely.

He owed her that.

The truth was, this time the old man had wanted him to bring Emma back.

The old man had watched three years of his social media posts. All those romantic gestures, laid on thick, and none of it had moved him.

Then Jake got the license on Valentine’s Day, and suddenly the old man got anxious.

He had heard somewhere that Emma had stayed with Jake through three years of hard times.

Yesterday, he had actually called specifically to say, “Bring that Emma girl home. Let me meet her.”

But Jake couldn’t bring Emma back.

Everything he had done was always for Sophia.

For three years, the old man thought Jake had actually fallen for someone, that he had finally settled down.

He finally gave in.

Emma’s family background wasn’t good. If Jake brought Sophia home now, the old man would see her as the better option.

Emma’s job was done. He didn’t have to lie to her anymore.

Sophia had gotten brain damage from that car accident because she saved him. Her memory was spotty. Sometimes she didn’t even recognize him.

But his family had never been willing to accept her.

If he didn’t marry her, no one else would.

As for Emma… he couldn’t quite put his finger on what he felt.

Sometimes when he watched her come home after working three jobs and still make him noodles, something in him softened.

But it only softened for a moment.

When they were kids playing house, he had promised Sophia he would only marry her in this life.

When it came to marriage, he could only give it to her.

As for everything else…
