Then he shook his head, laughing at himself for being ridiculous.

She wouldn’t even pay three extra dollars for the subway. She agonized over every small purchase.

“Jake.” Sophia had gotten out of the car without him noticing.

She wrapped her arms around his waist from behind. “We’re going to your parents’ place for a month, but we still haven’t done anything with that old crib.”

“We never ended up having kids, so it’s just taking up space.”

“How about we drop the crib off at her place before we leave?”

He was quiet for two seconds, then nodded. “Send me the address. I’ll see if we have time.”

Sophia looked down at her phone and started typing. “I’ll ask her.”

Jake’s phone buzzed. His father’s voice was unusually cheerful.

“You know the eldest son of the West family, don’t you? That guy who never showed any interest in anyone for ages? He suddenly got married today.”

Jake didn’t respond.

“The reception is in Portsville the day after tomorrow. You have to be there.”

“The West family is one of the wealthiest families in Portsville. They’re in the gold and jewelry business.”

“And the woman he married has quite a background too. She’s the true heir to the fire assay technique.”

“By marrying her, the West family has basically locked down the entire gold testing and refining business.”
