Luna Returned for Vengeance Chapter 13

Nora’s POV

How did Ethan know that Lucian and I once had a contract?

I was still processing this when hurried footsteps came from upstairs. The next second, Lucian stormed over to Ethan, looking furious.

“Who told you that Nora and I are still in a contract marriage?”

Ethan slowly stood up. He looked thoroughly confident, finally having seized his supposed proof

“Mr. Vale,” he said. “That contract you signed back then was drafted by a colleague of mine. You needed her to act as the Vale family’s matriarch and handle your clan elders. After five years, you would let her go, with sufficient funds to live without want for the rest of her days.”

He turned to me, his voice certain.

“Am I wrong?”

I looked down. But my mind had already drifted back, five years.

I had just arrived in North America. My parental inheritance had long been exhausted by endless litigation. I had almost nothing. I worked every job I could find just to stay alive. Later, I stumbled into an internship at a subsidiary of Vale Capital.

I was sent to serve coffee at a high-level meeting. The moment Old Mr. Vale laid eyes on me, eyes welled up. He said I looked just like his youngest granddaughter, who had died young.

From then on, he favored me greatly. He made me his assistant. The job was simple-keep him company, listen to him talk about his granddaughter’s childhood.

At that time, Lucian was in the middle of fighting for control of the Vale family. He needed a suitable Madam Vale. Someone who would please the old man. Someone with a clean record.

Someone docile and compliant orders.

So he came to me.

“Marry me. Be Madam Vale for five years. In exchange, I’ll help you establish a firm foothold in North America. When the contract ends, I’ll give you enough money to live well. Permanently.”

Back then, I needed money. I needed it to survive. And I needed it to go after the Lang family. So I said yes.

In the beginning, we really were just business partners. A contract marriage. Even our mate bond was just a legal registration at the Pack Hall to satisfy the Vale family. We had yet to seal our official

true mate bond. Legally, we were mates. Emotionally, we were partners on paper.

I maintained strict boundaries between us. I just had to wait out the five years, take the money, and leave.

But living together day after day-things changed. Slowly. Beyond our control.

When I got sick, he drove me to the Pack Hospital himself, in the middle of the night. When I woke up screaming for my parents, he held me all night without letting go. I mentioned once that I liked the taste of a certain wine. He purchased an entire vineyard and gifted it to me.

When I was scared and alone in a strange city, he canceled every meeting just to sit with me over a hot meal.

In the second year-on a snowy night-Lucian took me back to the Pack Hall. Not for anyone else. Just for us. We sealed our true mate bond.

And Lucian threw the contract into the fireplace. The flames swallowed the paper, piece by piece. He held me, his voice low and almost hesitant.

“Nora. We’re not a fake marriage anymore, are we? Can I really call you my mate now?”

The memory made me smile. I walked over and took Lucian’s hand. He held mine back immediately. His palm was always warm.

I looked at Ethan and smiled lightly.

“You certainly have quite the network, Mr. Shaw. Did your fellow lawyer never mention that we’re no longer just putting on an act?”
