Nora’s POV

“Please cancel my appointment,” I told the receptionist. “I will choose another law firm.”

I turned to leave, when Ethan’s mocking voice rang out behind me.

“What’s the matter? Can’t keep up the act?”

I paused in my tracks. I had no intention of acknowledging him, yet anger flared up within me instantly.

I turned around and looked him straight in the eye.

“My mate intends to transfer all his assets to me. I am here to consult on legal asset transfers. What does this have to do with you, my ex?”

Ethan scoffed, as if he had heard a ridiculous joke.

“Nora, use your head before you lie. Do you truly believe such absurd claims?”

A former classmate from college worked at his pack law firm and sneered, “You rent a fancy car and hire an actor to play along, and you think you can pass yourself off as the lady of a prominent Alpha family?”

Soft laughter spread through the crowd.

“I was fooled for a moment. I truly thought she had married well.”

“She likely latched onto a wealthy elderly Alpha.”

I trembled with anger and was about to speak when a shrill female voice rang out.

“Nora!”

The rapid clack of high heels drew near. The next instant, a harsh slap landed across my cheek.

My head snapped to the side. My ear rang. Sophie rushed up to me, her eyes red, and grabbed fistfuls of my collar.

“How dare you show your face to the Alpha! We are engaged, so why do you keep haunting us?”

I recovered and raised my hand to strike back, but my wrist was seized at once.

The familiar cold-wood scent hit me. Ethan. His imposing Alpha scent washed over me, carrying his usual stern authority. He frowned and spoke in a deep voice.

“Nora. Stop this.”

I could scarcely believe my ears. I was the victim of the assault, yet he restrained me instead.

A hint of triumph flickered in Sophie’s eyes. She then lunged forward and grabbed my hair roughly.

“How shameless can you be?! You hounded him all through college! You knew we grew up together, and you still forced your way in! Years later, and now you’re chasing him to his own office?!”

Her sharp fingernails scraped across my cheeks, and a string of heavy slaps followed immediately.

The whole place erupted.

“Oh my God. That’s insane.”

“It’s been years—why is she still bothering Ethan?”

“Poor fiancée.”

Someone was already holding up a phone, filming. The camera got right in my face.

“Make sure you get this. You don’t see an ex stalking someone like this every day.”

“I heard she was the one who chased him in college too.”

“Yeah, well. That’s what desperation gets you.”

The whispers and laughs washed over me like a flood. My scalp burned. I could barely stay upright. My wolf trembled faintly within my chest. It was not fear, but pure revulsion.

Ethan stood motionless the entire time and made no move to pull Sophie off me.

When Sophie grew weary, she threw herself into his arms and wept bitterly. “Alpha… I was so scared… what if she tries to take you away from me?”

People rushed to comfort her.

“Don’t worry. Ethan would never look twice at someone like her.”

“Everyone knows how close you two are. He’s always spoiled you.”

“Some people really need to learn their place.”

I almost laughed.

Five years ago, when Sophie killed my mother, Ethan stood just like this. Across from me. Protecting her. Like I was the one who’d done something wrong.

I should be used to it by now.

Ethan looked down at me like he was doing me a favor.

“Nora, apologize at once and swear to stop lying and causing trouble. I will resolve this mess for you.”

I just stared at him.

It was so absurd.

I hadn’t lied. I hadn’t chased anyone. I hadn’t caused anything. And he was treating me like some beggar he could toss a scrap to.

A bitter smile crossed my face while tears welled up in my eyes.

“Ethan, you disgust me.”

I lifted my hand and struck him hard across the cheek.
