Chapter 4: The Moment of Truth

For the next three days, I was the family’s top “protected” asset.

Stella simmered bone broth for me every day. For my recovery, she said.

Mark even dialed back his temper. He’d ask, with fake concern, if my chest still hurt.

Skyler, meanwhile, hyped his stream to the max-teasing an “epic” challenge, hinting at a mysterious top donor.

And me? I stayed in touch with Dr. Chance, feeding him the audio files. Every threat, every filthy word-now evidence.

Dr. Chance had good news too. He’d connected with a nonprofit that tracks illegal livestream abuse, and a top lawyer.

They were cooking up a solid plan to put the Clarks away.

“Dr. Chance, can your people be at the livestream? I’ve got a better idea.”

I didn’t just want them in jail.

I wanted them to fall from the sky and smash on the ground.

Livestream day.

Stella kept whispering in my ear. “Mia, how you feeling? Don’t mess this up. Look at you with makeup-so lively. Our Mia’s a pretty girl too.”

I stared at the pale, strange face in the mirror. Nothing.

The stream started. Skyler ran his mouth, worked the crowd into a frenzy.

Soon, my turn.

I lay on the freezing platform, the blinding lights overhead throwing me right back to the moment I died.

“Everyone! Here comes the moment of truth!”

At Skyler’s shout, Mark lifted the first slab.

Then the second. The third.

Year’s.

Skyler’s yelling got louder. Down below, Stella and Mark glued their eyes to the numbers, greed dripping off them.

At eight slabs, breathing got hard. That was my limit last life.

“Dad! Another one!” Skyler screamed from the stage.

The ninth slab came down.

The gifts exploded. A massive Super Chat effect gold and glittering-swallowed the whole

screen.

Skyler’s voice cracked with excitement. “Thank you to our top donor, Luke, for that massive Super Chat!”

Stella and Mark hugged each other, ecstatic.

“Mom, Dad, the donor says he’s buying us a mansion!” Skyler shouted down.

Everyone drunk on the rush of sudden riches. And I heard my own chest bones crack.

Metallic taste flooded my throat. Blood burst from my lips.

A second before I blacked out, I used the last of my strength to press the remote hidden in my pocket.
