I Walked Away From His Regret Chapter 11

I Walked Away From His Regret Chapter 11

Two days later, my lawyer came to see me. She looked helpless, and kept pausing before speaking.

“Mr. Lawrence. he still refuses to sign the divorce agreement.

“And he fell down the stairs when he was leaving the office. He broke a bone.”

I froze for a second.

She said, “He had a cold face the whole time, but he was clearly distracted.

“He missed a step, and now he’s in the hospital.”

Right after she finished talking, my phone rang. It was Edward’s assistant Evelyn.

“Ms. Quinn… could you please come see Mr. Lawrence?

“Mr. Lawrence has been in a really bad state these days. He works almost all night, every night, and won’t go home. Ever since you moved out, he barely goes back. The last time he went… it was just to get soup.”

I calmed myself, staring at the pen on my desk, and asked in a flat voice. “What does this have to do with

me?”

The other side went quiet, clearly shocked.

After a second or two of silence, there was a sharp crack, like a cup falling to the floor.

Then Evelyn gasped sharply. “Mr. Lawrence!”

I hung up the phone.

The sky outside the window darkened, and the clouds hung low and heavy.

It poured heavily that night.

The rain hammered against the windowpane, thick and fast.

A knock sounded on the door suddenly.

I got up and opened the door. Edward was standing there.

He was wearing a hospital gown, the blue-and-white striped fabric completely soaked through, clinging to his

body.

His leg was in a cast, and he was leaning on a crutch, propped against the door frame. His face was so pale

it was almost bloodless, like he would faint any second.

I was shocked. “Are you trying to kill yourself!”

He stared at me, unblinking, rain dripping off the hair on his forehead.

Then he slowly reached into his chest with his free hand, and pulled something out.

“Sheryl His voice was so hoarse it was almost unintelligible. “This is the ring you proposed to me with all those years ago. I’ve kept it safe this whole time.”

He bent his uninjured leg with difficulty, his knee hitting the floor hard.

He held the ring up in front of me.

“Sheryl, give me one more chance, okay?”

His voice was shaking.

“Please…”

The last two words were almost squeezed out of his throat, thick with suppressed sobs.

A lightning bolt split the sky outside, a brief flash of light flooded in, landing on his face.

I had never seen an expression like that on him. That face, always so calm, always so unflappable, like it

could fix any problem, now held an almost shattered look.

If this had been before, I would’ve thrown my arms around him already.

But now.

I couldn’t help turning my head to glance at the pitch-black window outside.

It had rained this hard that day, too. I held up the pull tab from a cola can, squatted down in front of him, and

grinned and asked him if he would marry me.

He stared for a long time, then bent down, pulled me up off the ground, and held me in his arms. He said yes.

But I couldn’t turn back time.

I shook my head.

“No.”

He slowly crumpled forward.

I closed the door.
