I Walked Away From His Regret Chapter 02

After he said that, he pulled Queenie into the car and left.

He never ate the New Year’s Eve dinner, and never looked back at me.

The last thing he left me with was—

“Eat if you want, if not just go home and cool off.”

I stood frozen at the entrance for a long time. Only when the restaurant host came over to ask if I needed help did I snap back to myself and say, “No, thank you.”

Then I turned around.

I didn’t notice the wet, slippery pavement under my feet, and I fell hard.

A sharp, searing pain bloomed in my lower abdomen instantly.

By the time restaurant staff got me to the hospital, I was already barely conscious.

Edward was listed as my emergency contact.

The hospital called him over and over, but no one answered. The last time, they got cut off straight away.

The medical staff looked at me with complicated expressions and asked if I had any other next of kin. I was covered in cold sweat, lying in bed, and shook my head slowly.

At noon the next day, Edward called back.

“Did you call me yesterday for something?”

I lazed around looking at the clouds outside the window.

First thing that morning, I’d seen Queenie’s post saying she’d made it to Europe.

She said the scenery was still the same, the man was still the same, like nothing had ever changed.

I’d lost so much blood on the operating table, even that old anger and resentment had drained right out with it.

I dragged my gaze back from the window and said, “Nothing. I dialed the wrong number.”

Then I hung up.

A few days later, the restaurant called Edward’s assistant Evelyn to check on me, asking how I was doing.

Evelyn told Edward what had happened. She said Edward didn’t say anything for a long time, just stood there like a broken statue.

After almost a minute or two, he said in a gravelly voice, “Book me the earliest flight home.”

He showed up at our front door in the middle of that same night.

He rushed in the door, but froze the second he saw me.

He opened his mouth.

“Sheryl… I’m sorry. I didn’t know…”

I only glanced at him once before looking away, smiled easily, and said, “It’s fine.”

But his face only tensed up more.
