I Walked Away From His Regret Chapter 12

I Walked Away From His Regret Chapter 12

He knelt outside the door for a long time.

Separated by the door, a heavy, suffocating feeling hung over both of us.

I closed my eyes.

In the middle of the night, people showed up.

I heard Evelyn’s low, hushed voice, pleading and begging, thick with obvious anxiety and urgency.

But Edward never said a word. He didn’t move an inch.

After a long time, I heard a dull thud of something heavy hitting the ground.

Then Evelyn’s panicked, hushed shout. The sounds outside the door quickly faded away, leaving nothing but

empty silence.

The next morning, I saw a news article pop up on my feed.

Someone had taken a photo of Edward in the hospital emergency room. He was lying on a gurney, his face ashen, no color on his lips at all, his eyes closed.

He was frighteningly thin, completely lifeless.

I stared at that photo for a long time, then slid down to squat along the edge of the bed, my forehead

pressed against my knees.

Five days later, my lawyer informed me that Edward had caved.

He agreed to sign the divorce papers, but he asked me to come in person.

I pushed open the door to his office.

He was sitting behind his desk, his face still pale and drawn. Even though he tried to hide it, he couldn’t hold

back a cough every now and then.

We were the only two in the office.

He looked up at me.

After a long moment, he said in a raspy voice. “I don’t want a divorce.”

He paused, then added weakly. “But I know that once you make up your mind about something, nothing can

change it.

“When you decided to marry me back then, you didn’t ask me anything, you didn’t think twice about anything, you just dragged me straight to the City Hall to get the license.”

A bitter, self-deprecating smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

“You used to be such a free-spirited person. You did whatever you wanted, you were happy every single you were always smiling.”

He looked at me, his gaze tracing my outline inch by inch.

“But this past year, you’ve changed. You barely smile anymore, you’re always unhappy. It’s like you’re a completely different person.

“I know I’m the one to blame for that.

“I’m sorry. Now that you’ve made up your mind to let go, I shouldn’t keep clinging to you. I should set you free, give us both a dignified ending.”

He flipped the file open and signed his name on the last page.

I said nothing, took the pen, and signed my name cleanly on the other line.

We set a date to go to the City Hall. He stood up to walk me out. When we reached the door, he stopped

suddenly.

“Sheryl.”

I turned around.

He rested one hand on the door frame, the light in his eyes dark and unreadable.

“Later… if we meet again someday, will we ever get another chance?”

I looked at him and shook my head.

“Edward, you always keep looking back. Whether it’s Queenie, or me.

“But I’m moving forward for the rest of my life.”

He froze.

I turned and opened the door, and said one last thing.

“Edward, I hope that one day you’ll stop looking back, and stop having regrets.”

I stepped forward and walked ahead.

“And I hope I never stop walking forward.”

Wind blew through the hallway.

I never looked back, and I left his company.

The spring sun was bright and clear.

The trees along both sides of the street rustled, their leaves a vivid, translucent green.

This spring would be a new beginning.
