Adrian froze. “I wouldn’t.” 

“How wouldn’t you?” Her voice trembled, her eyes filled with grievance. 

“She didn’t like the wedding I designed. You defended me with your words, but what did you actually do?” 

“You threw out all the old plans and personally watched every single detail get changed. Wasn’t that because you wanted to surprise her at the wedding?” 

“Haven’t you noticed? Because of the engagement party and the wedding, you’ve been too busy. You haven’t had dinner 

with me in ages. You haven’t told me bedtime stories in ages. You’ve already changed.” 

Adrian closed his eyes and rubbed hard at his brow. 

When he opened them again, they were filled with deep 

exhaustion. 

“Ivy, I have to have a family of my own someday. You can’t stay a child forever.” 

“I don’t care.” Tears rolled down her cheeks in large drops. “I only have you. You can’t abandon me.” 

Watching her cry until her whole body shook, his resolve 

softened. 

“I’m not abandoning you.” He sighed and drew her into his arms. “But you can’t treat her life like a game. This went too 

far.” 

She sobbed against his chest and asked in a muffled voice, “Is she dead?” 

“She’s not dead.” 

He cut her off almost immediately, his tone firm enough to sound like he was trying to convince himself. 

“She just ran off.” 

“Maybe she’s only playing the victim to make you worry,” Ivy muttered. 

His expression chilled slightly. “Evelyn isn’t that kind of person. Don’t insult her again.” 

Tears welled up in Ivy’s eyes again. 

Annoyance rose in him, but he still forced himself to stay 

patient. 

“I didn’t teach you properly before. Remember this. You don’t 

slander people behind their backs. Understand?” 

“Okay.” 

Ivy answered reluctantly, her voice thick with tears. 

He let out a long sigh inwardly. 

Wasn’t he partly responsible for what she had become? 

He would teach her slowly from now on. 

“Adrian, are you still taking me for a walk?” She tilted her face 

up, tears still shining in her eyes.

If this had been before, his heart would have melted instantly, 

and he would have agreed without hesitation. 

But now he did not want to do it. 

“No. Rest well.” He turned and walked out with steady steps. 

“I need to bring Evelyn back. We can’t delay the wedding.” 

If he had turned around then, he would have seen the 

bone–deep hatred in Ivy’s eyes. 

Maybe he would have realized sooner that some things were far more rotten than he imagined. 

He began sending people out like a madman, searching for any 

trace of me. 

But as the days passed, I seemed to have vanished completely. 

Was that good news? 

Maybe I was still alive. 

Maybe I simply did not want to see him anymore, so I had gone into hiding. 

But another, far more terrifying thought gnawed at him every night. 

What if I really had… 

No. 

No, that was impossible. 

He refused to think about it. 

But every time the thought surfaced, pain seized his heart. 

If only he had not carried Ivy away first. 

If only he had gone back himself… 

Caught between hope and terror, he suffered day after day. 

Until he received a call from the police, asking him to come 

identify a body. 

The officer said the body had been found at an abandoned dumping ground. 

With trembling hands, Adrian lifted the white sheet. 

A charred, curled body lay beneath it, burned beyond 

recognition. 

The stench of charred flesh rushed into his nose. 

He froze for a second. 

Then he turned to the officer in confusion. “Who is this? What does this have to do with me? Why did you ask me to identify the body?” 

The officer’s expression was complicated. “Do you know a woman named Evelyn Hart?” 

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “You’re saying this is her? That’s impossible. You made a mistake. Yes. You made a mistake.” 

His fingertips trembled, and then the tremor spread through his entire body. “She’s just hiding. She isn’t dead.”
