That night, Vivian called me.

She sounded like she’d been drinking.

She asked me to come over and stay with her.

“Grant found out you made the bracelet and cooked that dinner. His face changed immediately. He

even got mad at me…”

“I couldn’t take it, so I told him we were done.”

“It’s such a stupid little thing. I don’t get why he’s so angry.”

I pressed my lips together.

Guilt pricked at me.

Grant didn’t like me.

Maybe he even hated me.

For someone as proud as Grant, finding out he’d unknowingly worn a bracelet made by someone he disliked probably made him want to rip it off on the spot.

I took a cab to Vivian’s place.

I stayed with her most of the night.

I drank quite a bit too.

At one point, she picked up the wrong phone and sent a message from mine.

“Fine. If we’re broken up, I’ll ask someone else out right now.”

Half-drunk, she tapped a name at random.

She happened to choose Cole.

[Hey. Want to be my boyfriend?]

It took him a while to answer. [Seriously?]

Vivian’s fingers flew over the screen.

[Yeah. Too scared?]

[No… but are you drunk?]

e night had gone hazy around the edges.

Vivian was almost passed out.

She didn’t answer.

When she didn’t answer, Cole apparently lost patience and called.

My phone started ringing.

I looked at the phone in Vivian’s hand.

I sobered instantly.

I snatched it back and answered. “Sorry, just now…”

Before I could finish,

Vivian clung to my arm and murmured beside me, “Who are you talking to?”

Cole went quiet for a beat. “You’re at Vivian’s? Stay there. I’m coming.”

About twenty minutes later,

someone knocked.

I went to open the door.

But Cole wasn’t alone. Grant stood beside him.

“I figured Vivian needed someone too, so I called Grant,” Cole explained.
