I Called the Don My Future Brother-in-Law. He Called Me His Chapter 17

Celeste’s reputation was completely ruined.

Her academic fraud had been confirmed, and she had already been taken in for investigation by the

medical board and the relevant authorities.

The Arden family was dragged into it too. Several projects that had originally been under the Vittori medical network were all suspended.

I heard that plenty of other scandals about her had been dug up as well.

This time, she probably would not get out so easily.

Coincidentally, the day she was taken in happened to be my mother’s birthday.

Rafe came with gifts.

My mother personally welcomed him into our home.

I had no idea how Rafe had managed to win my mother over, but in any case, she liked him quite a

lot now.

After dinner, Rafe took the initiative to go into the kitchen and wash the dishes.

My mother nudged me and told me to walk him downstairs.

I walked him downstairs. Just as I was about to go back up, Rafe called out to me.

“Did you upload those things?”

I was not surprised. I only shrugged indifferently, neither admitting nor denying it.

“Did it happen before we knew each other, or after?”

He looked steadily at me, the corners of his eyes already turning red.

“Why did you never tell me?”

When I thought about how all the misfortune that girl and I had suffered had begun because of him,

I wanted to make him hurt a little more.

“Rafe, do you know why Celeste bullied me?”

I looked into his eyes and spoke each word clearly.

“It was all because of you.”

I told him everything from beginning to end.

I also told him about that other girl.

Actually, even if I had not said it, he could have guessed.

He was so smart. How could he not have figured it out?

After listening, he asked me with red eyes, “So that’s why you hate me?”

I turned my head to the side and did not answer.

My silence was an admission.

“But Sera, I didn’t do anything.”

“You can’t reject everything about me because of her.”

“I know I’m not the most innocent person here.”

“But Sera, I really didn’t know that one joke would hurt you for so long.”

“I’m sorry, Sera.”

“I really know I was wrong.”

“But everyone makes mistakes.”

“Can’t you give me a chance to make it right?”

He looked so wronged and pitiful.

The way he looked at me made it seem as if I had been the one bullying him.

I frowned.

“I heard she was your fiancée.”

Rafe immediately shook his head.

“I never acknowledged that.”

“She staged the whole thing in front of the media herself, saying things that made people

speculate.”

“I have nothing to do with her.”

I had nothing to say.

I still felt a resentment toward him that I could not put into words.

“Then after the SATS, why did you protect Celeste and make me apologize to her?”

Rafe blinked innocently.

“When did I protect her?”

“I told you to apologize because there were so many reporters there at the time.

“You told me you wanted to go to Columbia.”

“I was afraid that incident would affect you.”

After saying that, he added gloomily, “You refused to apologize no matter what. You have no idea how much work my PR team had to do afterward.”

“And also.”

“You clearly said your dream was Columbia, so why did your résumé list a different school?”

His voice grew lower and lower until it was almost choked.

“Sera, do you know how long I looked for you?”

“Do you know how I got through all these years?”

“I finally found you, and it was at your engagement dinner,

“And you said we were just classmates.”

Everyone said Rafe Vittori was arrogant and untamable.

They said he was the craziest mafia prince in the Manhattan underworld.

But now, standing in front of me, he showed none of that arrogance.

“Sera, if you still hate me for what happened back then, I’ll apologize to you, okay?”

“I’m sorry, Sera.”

“I’m sorry…”

His tone, his attitude, and the way he looked at me were all painfully careful.

As if he were afraid I would get upset and shut him out again.

I did not answer. I turned and prepared to go upstairs.

Just like he had done before in the hospital parking lot, Rafe followed closely behind me.

I turned back and looked at him indifferently.

A wounded look immediately appeared in Rafe’s eyes.

“I already apologized.”

“Are you still not willing to forgive me?”

Helpless, I spoke to him seriously, as if I were teaching a child.

“Rafe, you can apologize.”

“And I have the right to choose whether I forgive you.”

“Then have you chosen to forgive me?”

He asked eagerly.

I shook my head.

“No.”

I turned again and took two steps, only to find that he was still following me.

I turned back once more.

Rafe looked at me with a pair of bright, wet eyes and said softly, “It’s raining.”

“I don’t have an umbrella.”

Only then did I realize that a light rain had indeed started falling outside.

My attention had been completely caught by him just now, so I had not noticed it at all.

The stairwell lights were dim.

Rain had soaked his shoulders and made his black shirt cling to his chest.

He stood below the steps and looked up at me.

He looked like a ruined madman.

He also looked like a wild beast that had finally chosen to put away its claws and fangs.

I stayed silent for a moment, then turned and opened the door.

“Come in.”

Rafe’s eyes lit up at once.

He followed me upstairs, his steps very light.

After we entered, I tossed him a towel.

“Dry yourself off.”

He caught it, but he did not move.

He only stood in the entryway and looked at me.

“Sera.”

I looked up.

In the next second, he suddenly reached out and pulled me into his arms.

His body still carried the cold dampness of the rainy night, but his palm was frighteningly hot.

“I can wait for you to forgive me.”

He kept his voice very low.

“But don’t push me away to someone else again.”

Before I could speak, he lowered his head and kissed me.

It was not the kind of clumsy, reckless kiss from our teenage years.

Nor was it like that restrained, almost-mad closeness in the office during the day.

This kiss was heavier and deeper.

It carried the loss of control he had held back for so many years.

I should have pushed him away.

But my fingers grabbed his shirt first.

Rafe’s breath hitched. He held my waist and pressed me against the entryway cabinet.

Rain pattered against the window.

Inside, the lights were dim.

His kiss trailed from the corner of my lips to the side of my ear, and his voice was impossibly

hoarse.

“Sera.”

“If you tell me to stop now, I’ll stop.”

I did not speak.

I only raised my hand and looped my arm around his neck.

The last shred of reason in Rafe’s eyes shattered completely in that moment.
