His Son, Her Photo, My Turn Chapter 04

Three days later, Valerie was discharged from the hospital.

When Summer came to pick her up, there was no sign of Jonathan.

“Jonathan isn’t here? How did he suddenly become so cruel? I remember one time a chef forgot about your peanut allergy and put a tiny bit of peanut butter in your salad, nearly killing you. Jonathan stormed straight into the kitchen and beat the chef half to death…”

Valerie cut her off, “That’s all in the past.”

“Fine, fine. I’m glad you’re seeing things clearly. As a reward, I’m taking you to The Sapphire Lounge tonight to watch the male dancers!”

As the two went to handle the discharge paperwork, they happened to see Lily paying at the counter.

Summer sneered, “Whose money do you think she’s spending? It must be Jonathan’s. You guys aren’t divorced yet, so every single penny that mistress spends belongs to your marital assets…”

Her voice carried, and several bystanders overheard.

“That woman is a mistress?”

“You really can’t tell from looking. Girls nowadays have no morals, becoming homewreckers without a shred of shame.”

“No wonder her son ended up in the hospital. Serves her right!”

“If I were the legal wife, I’d freeze my husband’s assets and cut her off completely.”

Lily heard them too.

She spun around, her face flushed crimson.

“Mrs. James, why must you have your friend running around calling me a mistress?”

“Aren’t you?” Summer nearly laughed out loud. “A homewrecker who doesn’t even have the guts to admit it?”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears. “You guys are going too far.”

“Oh look, she’s crying! What a manipulative little fox, she really knows how to put on a show!”

“Summer, drop it.”

Valerie held her friend back, never giving Lily a single glance.

“Take me home to change first, then join me for a few drinks at The Sapphire Lounge tonight.”

At The Sapphire Lounge, Valerie sank into the VIP sofa, watching the crowd on the stage. A sudden wave of emptiness washed over her.

She remembered her bachelorette party night before their wedding, when she had drunk too much and a stranger tried to hit on her.

Just as panic was setting in, Jonathan appeared and kicked the man away.

“You dare touch my wife? Do you have a death wish?”

“Listen up, everyone! The woman beside me, Valerie Vance, is my wife! Anyone who touches her in the future will answer to me.”

Under the dim, hazy lights, Valerie had gazed infatuatedly at the man, silently vowing to love him for the rest of her life.

Yet now, it had only been three years…

“Hey, Valerie, what are you spacing out for? Drink up!”

“Don’t tell me you’re still thinking about Jonathan? I’m telling you, if you still want him, you need to make a move!”

“Jonathan definitely still loves you, he’s just bewitched by that little fox! If you put on a miniskirt tonight and cover yourself in chocolate sauce, he’ll be completely helpless.”

“Cover myself in chocolate sauce?” Valerie smiled faintly. “I suppose that technique could be used on someone else.”

“What?” Someone failed to catch her words. “Are you planning on cheating?”

“Since everyone is here today, I have an announcement to make.” Valerie raised her glass, her voice projecting across the booth. “Jonathan and I are getting a divorce in three days! After that, I’m marrying someone else. You all better show up to celebrate on the day we file the papers!”

Everyone in the booth froze. “Are you serious? You’re really divorcing Jonathan?”

“Who’s the new guy? You didn’t tell us a thing!”

“He is…”

Valerie was cut off as a bottle service girl approached carrying two cases of beer.

The voice sounded familiar, and Summer suddenly grabbed the girl’s arm.

“Well, well, look who it is. You’re working as a cocktail waitress here at The Sapphire Lounge? What’s the matter? Is Jonathan not giving you enough allowance?”

“The mistress who ruined Valerie’s marriage?”

The other women stood up instantly. “She looks completely ordinary. Jonathan must be blind!”

Lily ignored them, keeping her eyes fixed on Valerie.

“I heard that if I drink with you, I can earn ten thousand dollars, is that true?”

Valerie remained silent. Her friends had been having a wild night and had indeed handed ten thousand dollars to some male dancers earlier.

Summer smirked, slamming a thick stack of cash onto the table. “Yeah, that’s our rule tonight. Finish every bottle here, and the ten grand is yours.”
