His Son, Her Photo, My Turn Chapter 03

His Son, Her Photo, My Turn Chapter 03

“Valerie!”

Before losing consciousness, she saw Jonathan rush over and lift her into his arms.

He looked terrified and frantic.

But her heart had already gone completely numb.

When she woke up again, she heard a woman weeping beside her.

“Jonathan, you really didn’t have to do that. Although Silas is your son, Mrs. James is the woman you love most. It must break your heart to torture her like this.”

“Silly girl, I will never tolerate anyone hurting our son. That includes Valerie, even if she used to be the person I loved most.”

Valerie opened her eyes. Her throat still felt raw and incredibly dry.

She didn’t look at Jonathan, turning instead to the private nurse standing nearby. “Excuse me, could I have some water?”

“Valerie, you’re awake.”

Hearing her voice, Jonathan automatically took the water from the nurse and brought it to Valerie’s lips.

She didn’t let him feed her, reaching out to take the glass herself and draining it in one gulp.

As the cold water slid down her esophagus, she finally felt a bit of relief.

“Mrs. James, are you alright? You were unconscious for a whole day and night. Jonathan was so worried about you that he didn’t even visit Silas when he woke up. But next time, could you please not hurt Silas? He’s so small, he poses no threat to you.”

Only then did Valerie fix her gaze on Lily Foster.

Since waking from her coma, she knew such a person existed, but she had never looked at her closely.

Now she realized this woman truly looked remarkably like her.

Their auras were entirely different, though. Lily was like a fragile white flower, projecting a pitiful, pathetic image that Valerie found revolting.

But men loved it.

Who didn’t love a manipulative, innocent-acting girl?

Valerie set the glass down and said flatly, “I put the cash into the envelope right at the hotel front desk. There are security cameras stretching from the front desk to the elevator, and all the way to the banquet hall entrance. If you want to know whether I put a petal inside, just check the hotel surveillance.”

Hearing this, Lily’s expression instantly turned incredibly ugly.

Jonathan frowned. “Haven’t you thrown enough of a tantrum? If it wasn’t you, who else could it be? Are you suggesting Lily framed you? That’s her own flesh and blood!”

She smiled and countered, “I’m just suggesting it, why get so defensive? I never said Ms. Foster did it.”

Jonathan snapped, “Valerie!”

“Jonathan, Mrs. James, please don’t argue because of me anymore. I shouldn’t be here anyway. I’ll go back to take care of Silas.”

With bloodshot, tear-rimmed eyes, Lily turned and left. Heartbroken for her, Jonathan wanted to follow.

“Valerie, let’s not fight. Silas just woke up, I—”

Valerie didn’t stop him. “Go ahead. When a child is sick, he really needs his father by his side.”

Jonathan assumed she was speaking out of spite, but her eyes were serene, filled with an absolute dead silence. She didn’t seem angry at all.

The more she acted this way, the heavier the unease in his heart grew.

“Valerie, you’ve been acting strange ever since you woke up. Are you worried that I won’t want you anymore now that I have Silas and Lily? Don’t overthink things. You will always be my wife, the only one.”

Looking at his display of deep affection, Valerie felt nothing but contempt, though a smile remained on her face.

“Jonathan, you’re a man of duty, I understand. Ms. Foster had your child, so it’s only right for you to take care of her. I won’t complain. And don’t worry about me overthinking things. I won’t, because I’ve already figured everything out.”

She had figured out that she was leaving him.

“Really?” he asked, his voice laced with suspicion. “I don’t want you pretending to be generous on the surface while secretly doing things to hurt Silas. That will only make me despise you.”

“I’m tired.”

Valerie didn’t want to waste any more words on him, pulling the blanket up to go back to sleep.

Once Jonathan left, she immediately called the hotel.

“Help me check a segment of the security footage.”

Soon, the hotel sent over a video clip.

The footage clearly proved that she had never placed any flower petal into the envelope from start to finish.

Instead, it was Lily who had plucked a petal from the hallway when Jonathan wasn’t looking and slipped it into the envelope.

She forwarded the video to Jonathan right away, adding a caption: [The evidence, proving my innocence.]

She no longer cared what Jonathan thought of her, but she would absolutely never take the blame for something she didn’t do.
