His Son, Her Photo, My Turn Chapter 05

“Fine, I’ll drink.”

Lily began chugging the beer without a second thought, draining glass after glass.

“She’s actually doing it, all for a bit of cash?”

Summer rolled her eyes and was about to mock her further when the woman suddenly coughed up a mouthful of bright red blood.

The blood splattered across Valerie’s clothes.

Valerie frowned, about to ask if she was alright, when another figure charged in frantically from outside.

“Lily! What’s wrong? Don’t scare me!”

Jonathan held her, his gaze sweeping over the empty bottles on the table.

“You forced her to drink? Valerie! Did you know Lily suffered a gastric perforation before? She can’t touch alcohol! Let’s go, Lily, I’m taking you to the hospital right now.”

But Lily refused to move, reaching her trembling hand out toward Summer. “Miss… you promised me… if I finished the alcohol, you’d give me the ten thousand dollars!”

Summer was stunned. She hadn’t expected the woman to be obsessed with money at a moment like this.

“Mrs. James, I may be the mistress, but I refuse to spend a single dime of Jonathan’s money! I proved it to you. This ten thousand dollars was earned with my own hands… it doesn’t belong to your marital assets!”

“Don’t say any more, Lily.”

Jonathan scooped her up, casting a lethal glare at Summer.

“Valerie, you and your friends are truly something else!”

He swept out of the lounge. The woman in his arms glanced back over his shoulder, a triumphant, mocking smirk flashing across her lips.

Summer immediately apologized, “I’m so sorry, Valerie. Did Jonathan misunderstand you? I dragged you into this.”

“It’s not your fault, Summer.”

Valerie forced a smile, but a creeping dread was growing in her chest. For the first time in ten years, the look Jonathan gave her before walking out filled her with pure, unadulterated terror.

For the next two days, Jonathan never came home.

The day before the divorce decree was finalized, disaster struck.

She received a frantic phone call from Summer’s parents.

“Valerie! Summer is missing! She hasn’t come home in two days!”

At that moment, goosebumps erupted all over Valerie’s skin. Jonathan’s parting look flashed through her mind—that freezing, completely lifeless stare.

Without a moment’s hesitation, she sped toward the hospital.

When she arrived at the ward, Jonathan was taking care of Lily.

Because of her gastric perforation, Lily couldn’t eat solid foods, so Jonathan was carefully spoon-feeding her porridge.

His gentle, painstaking demeanor still stung Valerie’s heart.

“Jonathan.” She pushed the door open and went straight to the point. “Where did you take Summer?”

Jonathan didn’t move, nor did he look back.

“Why did you target her? You know she’s my best friend!”

She hadn’t cried when she discovered Jonathan’s betrayal, nor had she wept when she learned about his child.

But today, she broke. Summer had grown up with her and was the most important person in her life.

She could absolutely not let anything happen to her!

Jonathan didn’t stop feeding the porridge, his voice flat and icy.

“She called Lily a mistress, claimed she was spending my money, and forced Lily to work at a club to prove herself. She triggered Lily’s gastric perforation. Why shouldn’t I teach her a lesson?”

Valerie bit her lip, her voice trembling violently. “If she did something wrong, it was because of me. For old time’s sake, let her go, please.”

She closed the distance, her voice dropping to a raw, desperate whisper as she looked Lily dead in the eye. “I can apologize on her behalf. Ms. Foster, please let Summer go.”

Lily pretended to plead with Jonathan, “Let it go, Jonathan. Release Miss Shaw, I’m sure she didn’t mean it.”

Jonathan turned his head to look at Valerie, his narrow eyes narrowing slightly. “Valerie, I can let her go for your sake, but you need to rein in your best friend.”

“If there’s a next time, I will truly kill her.”

He slowly drew a key from his pocket and threw it at her feet.

“The hound facility on the west outskirts. Go find her there.”
