He Was Ready To Die Until I Told Him I Was Pregnant Chapter 09

Arthur looked up from Lily and finally noticed me standing in the doorway. I’d seen the whole thing

He went pale.

“Clara… let me explain.”

“Nothing happened, I swear…”

“I was just…”

“You don’t have to explain.”

I shook my head, keeping my voice even.

“We’re just co-parenting. That was always the deal.”

“…Is that really what you think?”

Something in Arthur’s face cracked.

“Isn’t it?” I raised an eyebrow.

“No.”

Arthur looked down for a moment. When he met my eyes again, the hesitation was gone.

He closed the distance between us.

“At first… yeah, it was just about the baby. I was doing what I thought was right.”

“But somewhere along the way, that changed. My feelings for you changed a long time ago.”

“I was just too scared to say it. Too scared to even admit it to myself…”

“Can you give me a chance? A real one?”

“I promise it’s only you. Let’s do this for real: you, me, Lily. A real family.”

With the way he was looking at me, my heart did a little flip before I could stop it.

I didn’t say no.

“Fine… I guess I can live with that.”

Let’s be real. The man was rich and gorgeous.

Sweet, attentive, and his cooking had actually gotten pretty good…

Plus, Lily had him completely whipped.

All things considered, I could do a lot worse.

Arthur’s eyes lit up again.

He crossed the room in two steps. One arm around Lily, the other reaching for my hand. He leaned in, hesitant, and pressed a kiss to the corner of my mouth.

I tilted my chin up and kissed him back.

Lily had no idea what was happening, but she clapped her little hands and giggled anyway.

We pulled apart, both a little flushed. Arthur ducked his head and kissed Lily’s cheek.

[Wait, are Arthur and Clara actually making this work?? This plot is wild…]

[But honestly it’s so sweet I could cry…]

[Perfect daughter, perfect wife, and he’s finally happy. Please just let them stay like this forever.]

[He spent years thinking the world was dark. Turns out he just hadn’t found his light.]

The comments were nothing but warmth.

I read them, and something warm bloomed in my chest.

After that, Arthur poured everything he had into us.

Outside of work, he was with us every waking minute.

He kept showing up with gifts, for me, for Lily, sometimes for no reason at all.

A few days later, he went to an auction and dropped sixty million on two sets of jewelry.

On his way out, a swarm of reporters cut him off.

“Mr. Sterling, can we ask you a few questions?”

“We’ve heard you’ve never been much of an auction guy. What brought you out today?”

Arthur was the richest man in Oakhaven, but growing up with nothing had left its mark. He wasn’t the type to

throw money around.

“You dropped a fortune on two one-of-a-kind jewelry sets… Are those for Mrs. Vance?”

“We hear she’s been pushing for a divorce.”

“Are you trying to win her back?”
