I delayed leaving work by an hour.

On the drive home, I deliberately circled two extra blocks.

By the time I arrived, it was already late.

Ethan had probably gotten tired of waiting and eaten dinner on his own.

But when I opened the door, there was a bouquet of roses on the dining table, with two candles beside it.

The dishes were neatly arranged.

Ethan sat at the table, waiting.

When he heard me come in, he lifted his eyes.

I stood in the entryway.

“Why didn’t you eat first?”

He looked at me for a while before saying, “Claire, did you forget what day it is?”

I froze.

Seeing my expression, the corner of his mouth tightened slightly.

“Today is the day we decided to get married.”

For a moment, I felt dazed.

That day, I had held up a ridiculous ring made from a soda can tab and proposed to him.

He said the proposal should have been his job.

After thinking about it, I said, “Then every year on this day, propose to me again.”

This was our second year.

I fell silent.

I remembered that while he was still in Europe, I had already deleted that reminder from my phone calendar.

So my phone hadn’t reminded me.

And I hadn’t remembered.

Ethan said, “If you forgot, you forgot. I’ll have the housekeeper heat the food.”

As he spoke, he stood to get the decanter.

I walked over and stopped him.

“Forget it.”

He froze and looked down at me.

“Ethan… forget it.”

His fingers stiffened around the decanter.

“What do you mean?”

I looked up at him.

Then I said gently, “Ethan, let’s get divorced.”

Ethan stayed silent for a long time.

He gripped the decanter, then slowly loosened his hand and set it down.

“What I said outside the restaurant last time was anger talking.”

There it was again.

“But what I’m saying isn’t anger talking.” I looked into his eyes, helpless but clear. “Ethan, I’m serious.”

“You once told me not to say breakup casually. We’ve been together this long, and other than that one time, I’ve never brought up leaving.”

I paused.

“So this time, I’m serious.”

He seemed stunned.

“Why?”

“Is it because of Olivia? Nothing happened between us. I really only see her as a friend.”

“If… if you still can’t accept it, tell me what you want me to do.”

His voice lowered.

“Don’t joke about divorce.”

I was quiet for a moment.

“I’m really not joking.”

“I’ve already found a lawyer. Do you have time tomorrow? I’ll have her come to your office.”

He took a deep breath, his chest rising and falling.

“I don’t have time.”

“Then tell me when you do. I’ll schedule it ahead.”

Anger appeared on his face.

“Why exactly?” he asked. “Because of Olivia, or because of that… child?”

I didn’t want to mention the child.

His eyes reddened.

“I really didn’t know you were pregnant.” His voice was tight. “If I had known, I wouldn’t have left you standing alone in the snow. I wouldn’t have abandoned you outside that restaurant.”

“Claire… I really regret it.”

Tears gathered in my lowered eyes.

After a pause, I said, “If it weren’t for that child, would you even regret it?”

He froze.

“It’s not like that.”

As he spoke, he reached for my wrist.

I dodged.

“I don’t want to keep comparing myself to another woman. I don’t want to keep being afraid. I don’t want to love someone who doesn’t love me enough.”

“I’m not that generous. I’m not a saint.”

His voice was low and urgent.

“But I love you.”

“I love you so much. I only love you.”

“Olivia and I are over.”

I shook my head.

“Your love has a bias.”

“You love me, but you can’t let Olivia go. What I want is a pure love, a love that always chooses me first.”

He opened his mouth, still wanting to speak.

I cut him off.

“When are you free? Our divorce lawyers should meet.”
