After saying that, he pulled Olivia into the car.

There was no New Year’s Eve dinner.

He didn’t look back at me.

The last thing he left me with was:

“Eat the dinner if you want. If you don’t, go home and calm down by yourself.”

I stood at the entrance for a long time.

Only when the host asked whether I needed help did I come back to myself.

“No.”

Then I turned to leave.

I didn’t notice the slippery pavement under my feet.

I fell.

A sharp pain tore through my lower abdomen.

By the time the restaurant staff sent me to the hospital, I was barely conscious.

My emergency contact was Ethan.

They called again and again. No one picked up.

The last call was rejected.

The medical staff looked complicated as they asked whether I had any other family.

Cold sweat covered me as I lay on the bed. Slowly, I shook my head.

The next noon, Ethan called.

“Did you call me yesterday for something?”

I looked lazily at the clouds outside the window.

That morning, I had already seen Olivia’s Instagram Story. She had arrived in Europe.

She wrote that it was the same scenery and the same person, as if nothing had ever changed.

On the operating table, I lost a lot of blood.

Somehow, even that last bit of resentment seemed to drain out with it.

I pulled my eyes back and said weakly, “Nothing. Dialed by mistake.”

Then I hung up.

A few days later, the restaurant made a follow-up call to check on me.

The call reached Ethan’s assistant, and they asked how my health was.

His assistant told him.

She said Ethan said nothing for a long time, like a statue frozen in place.

After about a minute or two, he said hoarsely, “Book a flight back. The soonest one.”

That night, around midnight, he appeared at the door of our home.

He rushed inside with hurried steps, but froze the second he saw me.

His lips parted.

“Claire… I’m sorry. I didn’t know…”

I looked at him once, then turned my eyes away and gave him an easy smile.

“It’s fine.”

His expression tightened instead.
