“Come to think of it, I wanted to ask when I came in earlier. Mr. and Mrs. Croft, Ella was diagnosed with progressive amnesia. She was supposed to come in for a follow-up days ago.”

“Where is she now?”

Dr. Cole grew more agitated, even chiding them.

“That child’s condition is far more serious than a few cuts and scrapes!”

“How can you parents be so neglectful?”

My parents were completely stunned.

Progressive amnesia?

This was the first time they’d ever heard those words. They had no idea what Dr. Cole was talking about.

But Gideon, standing beside them, had gone pale.

He grabbed Dr. Cole’s arm, pressing urgently.

“Dr. Cole, what are you saying?”

“What is… progressive amnesia?”

Dr. Cole looked at these people’s reactions and instantly understood.

They knew nothing.

Dr. Cole let out a long sigh.

“Progressive amnesia. Simply put, the patient’s brain is like a whiteboard being slowly erased.”

“She will gradually forget everyone around her—from strangers to even the people closest to her. Eventually, she’ll forget where she lives, and even who she is. That’s why I told her to come back right away for follow-up and to discuss treatment plans.”

“I told her to go home and tell her family—to get further evaluation immediately!”

Dr. Cole stared at my parents, his gaze full of disappointment.

“Haven’t you noticed all this time? Does she carry a little notebook and write things down? Does she sometimes take a long moment to recognize even the people closest to her?”

My parents fell completely silent.

And Gideon fell into a silence just as deep.

They had all noticed something off about me.

They just thought it was another one of my ploys to compete with Vanessa for attention.

Turns out, none of it was an act.

I was really sick.

My mother lowered her head, hesitating.

“I…”

My father muttered to himself, his face paper-white.

“I did see her with a notebook these past few days… I just never thought…”

Before he could finish,

Boom!

Another flash of lightning outside the window.

Suddenly, Gideon realized something.

The rain, the wilderness, and a person with progressive amnesia.

I couldn’t remember where I lived.

I couldn’t even remember who I was.

And he had thrown me out into the middle of a storm on a deserted road.

“Shit!”

Gideon cursed and bolted out of the room like a madman.

My parents watched Gideon’s frantic exit, and it finally hit them about me.

They couldn’t even spare another glance at Vanessa on the bed, stumbling and rushing out after Gideon.

“Hurry, hurry—drive, go find her!”

“Ella is still out there!”

The rain hammered down.

Two cars tore through the empty roads at breakneck speed.

Finally, they reached that desolate junction.

But it was completely empty.

Not a soul in sight.

Gideon threw open the car door and ran into the rain, screaming into the empty wilderness.

“Ella!”

No answer.

My mother got out too, already sobbing uncontrollably.

“Where’s Ella?!”

“Where is she?! Why can’t we see her?!”

Gideon wiped the rain from his face, forcing himself to stay calm.

He turned to my parents.

“I’ll search the fields and hills around here. You two drive toward the city center along this road—she… she might have gone home, or gotten lost somewhere else.”

“Also, call the house servants. If she comes back, call us immediately.”

My parents nodded frantically and scrambled back into the car, starting the engine.

Gideon plunged alone into the overgrown field by the roadside.

He stumbled through the mud, shouting my name at the top of his lungs.

“Ella!”

“Ella!”
