He Guaranteed Her Loan, I Filed for Divorce the Same Day Chapter 06

I packed the divorce paperwork, identification documents, and every backup of my video

recordings.

Darien was already waiting out front of County Family Court..

When he spotted me, he walked over, his tone gentle.

“You’ve had a whole month to reflect on your mistakes. It’s time to come home. Kai misses

you.”

I paused.

“Are you trying to back out of the divorce?”

Darien’s expression soured.

“Elowen, haven’t you thrown enough fits? Keep this up, and there will be no place for you in this family anymore.”

I turned and walked straight toward the court clerk’s window. I held out a pen.

“Sign.”

Darien stared at me. At last he let out a cold laugh and signed without hesitation.

“Fine. Maybe this hard lesson is what you need to tell right from wrong.”

He turned and walked off.

The second he stepped outside the court building, a gray van peeled off the curb and screeched to a stop directly in front of him.

Several men climbed out.

“Darien Hale?”

A promissory note smacked hard against his chest.

“Lorelei Veyra took out this loan. You signed as guarantor. Two million dollars. Today is the final due date. Pay up.”

“Two million? Lorelei only borrowed fifty-thousand!”

The men unfolded the loan document for him to see.

Darien’s eyes traced down the printed text. Two-million. Borrower: Lorelei Veyra, Guarantor: Darien Hale.

His breathing turned ragged. He fumbled for his phone and dialed Lorelei’s number.

[The number you have dialed is no longer in service.]

Every drop of color drained from Darien’s face in an instant.

It looked as if all the bones had been pulled out of his body.

He flipped the loan paper over and over. His hands shook so badly he could barely hold it.

“She told me it was only fifty-thousand.”

The debt collectors wasted no time on conversation. They snatched his phone, forced his fingers to unlock the screen.

They pulled up his transaction records. Darien stared in disbelief.

One after another, scans of the guaranty documents he had signed appeared on his phone. Stacks of them.

His knees buckled, slamming against the edge of the step, and his whole body started to slump down.

Two men grabbed him under each arm and shoved him into the van like a limp sack.

I stood motionless on the steps.

Darien leaned halfway out of the van window, his face deathly pale.

“Elowen! Help me! You know people. You must have some way out of this!”

I looked at him.

“We’re divorced now.”
