He Guaranteed Her Loan, I Filed for Divorce the Same Day Chapter 02

Father and son both froze.

I set the camera down on the media console, aiming its lens across the entire living room.

“Darien, let’s get everything on record. That way none of you can later claim I didn’t try to stop you, and no one can tie this obligation back to my assets.”

Darien’s brows slammed together.

“A person’s life hangs in the balance, and you’re sitting here calculating numbers?”

He reached out to swat the camera away. I blocked his arm.

“You know our son needs costly medical procedures for an ongoing health issue, yet you’re still willing to drain every bit of our savings for Lorelei, even if it means Kai might go untreated.”

Darien stiffened. Kai blew up instantly.

“Don’t use me as an excuse! There’s nothing wrong with my body!”

“Mom, you’re so selfish! Aunt Lorelei is practically in crisis, and all you can do is crunch numbers!”

A notification popped up from my attorney. I opened the attachment, the full personal-guaranty risk disclosure filling my screen.

I held the device out toward Darien.

He swatted it away.

“Don’t try to scare me. I’m a grown man. I understand what I’m doing.”

I locked eyes with him.

“Darien, how much do you take home every month?”

He frowned.

“8000.”

“How much do we have in savings?”

He hesitated, growing irritated.

“12000. If you’re hoping this will make me back off, save your breath.”

I ignored his remark and kept pressing.

“How many years left on our mortgage and auto loans?”

Darien went quiet. He wouldn’t answer.

I said it for him.

“26 years.”

“You know you’re buried under commitments. You know your income doesn’t cover your bills. You know our son has a serious health concern. Even knowing all that, you’d drain every asset we own for Lorelei. You’d even take on unfavorable lending to do it?”

Annoyance flooded his face.

“Elowen, is there anything you can do besides run numbers?”

I laughed.

“I run numbers so you understand your actual situation. If you sign this 50000 guaranty and the creditors come calling, what exactly are you going to pay them with?”

He raised his voice.

“I’ll pay it back little by little. Funds always come around.”

I cut him off.

“Little by little? On 8000 a month? Are you planning 30 years of payments? 50? You might be fine dragging this out, but do you think the lenders will wait that long?”

A vein bulged on Darien’s temple.

“Elowen, don’t you think you’re being terrifyingly unfeeling right now?”

Lorelei broke down sobbing, her knees buckling like she was about to collapse onto the floor.

“Please don’t push Darien. This is all my fault…”

I turned toward her.

“How much total death benefits and wrongful-death settlement funds did your husband’s case award? When is that payout supposed to arrive?”

Her voice turned small and hesitant.

“It hasn’t been approved yet…”

“What’s the principal on the loan you took out? What’s the monthly interest rate?”

Lorelei went rigid, shaking her head wildly.

“I don’t know. Truly I don’t. Darien, I’m so scared…”

Darien stepped in front of her, shielding her from me. Kai rushed over and shouted in anger.

“Mom! Aunt Lorelei isn’t well! Stop badgering her!”

I looked at them both with icy detachment.

“Sign the divorce papers. You can take your share of the marital property and burn every cent paying off her obligations for all I care.”
